The restaurant has a formal air conditioned restaurant that you can eat at 2 times during your stay. The service is wonderful and the food is amazing. Plus it is nice to not sweat while eating!

We had a day to spend in Liberia before catching a flight home the next morning and were looking for a little local flavor. We definitely found it at Tacos Cantarannas! It is located on the highway between Liberia airport and the town of Liberia, roughly 4km from the airport. It was a little bit hard to find, but look for the Derby sign and you're there. It looks like just a private house, and it is, but the restaurant is on your left as you pull up to the house. It is a little family run place and doesn't look like most restaurants you are used to seeing, but be brave! you won't be sorry. We actually showed up at about 2:00 in the afternoon and it didn't look like it was open and we happened to catch the owner as he was about to run to town. With my limited Spanish, I told him we wanted to have lunch. He said he would open the place up for us. I later figured out that they usually aren't open until 5pm, oops. It is a very small, run down kind of place, but is very charming in it's own way. The Tacos were fantastic and the chef/owner (I wish I would have gotten his name) was very friendly and accommodating of our every request. All they had on the day we were there were steak tacos. Everything was fresh and delicious. He made our tacos with fresh slabs of skirt steak (fajita meat), grilled onions, melted cheese, and freshly grilled corn tortillas. The tacos were AWESOME! The steak was flavorful and perfectly seasoned, the onions were cooked just right, and the melted cheese added just the right amount of creamy goodness. We also got a side of guacamole which was made fresh and was superb. It's definitely worth the trip.

Steak tacos and the guacamole.
The food isn't spectacular but is still good. What makes this place great is the ability to hang out on a covered outdoor patio letting the breeze cool you off while watching kids play in the park, couples walking, and talking to anyone that walks by about their hometown.
At this place you get big servings for a good price. The interior isn't that great, but the food is good, especcially if you are on a budget.
It was great ot eat here after weeks of cheap rice, beans and meat.

I had a curry-chicken with rice and it was great and spicy.
Just a block to the west of the main square, there is a 24-hour open air joint with chickens always rotating on the grill.
BEWARE! We asked the guy working there, a self-proclaimed Texas A&M grad, what their special was. After a five minute wait, he brought us menus and told us that the burritos were the best.
Uh, NO! They were small, nasty and covered with mayonase and ketchup. I thorough mess! We both returned wishing we had gone to bed hungry.
Not to mention the waiters apparent attention deficit problems, as he turned a 30-minute meal into an hour of dissapointment.
Sad, because all the other food in Costa Rica was GREAT!
