One way of getting into and out of Playa Samara is to use the little planes of Sansa airlines. I was pressed for time, so decided to use them. It's a 30 minute flight from here to San Jose. The 'airport' consists of a corrugated tin roof alongside the road across from Playa Carillo a 5 minute cab ride away. The landing strip is hardened dirt, and the Cessna plane seats about 15 people. You get a great view when taking off and landing since they take off right over the beach. Worked fine for me.

Ticket was about $75. You land in San Jose right next to the big airport of Santamaria.

Service to and from San Jose

The main bus company that serves Samara to and from San Jose is ALFARO.

They offer daily service FROM San Jose to Samara at 12:30 pm and 6:30 pm and the return bus leaves Samara for SJ at 4:30 am and 8:30 am. The special Sunday services leaves Samara at 8:30 am and 3:30 pm.

The service is fairly direct and only stops occasionally to pick up or drop off local passengers. They stop in Nicoya and make one rest stop. The trip is approximately 5 hours though this can depend on traffic, weather and road conditions.

The price is 2800 colones or a bit more than $6. Best to buy tickets in advance to ensure a seat and also best to call in advance to confirm times

Playa Samara, quiet time on the beach

Samara is a small town, about 4-5 hours from San Jose. The ‘touristy’ part consists of about 5 streets right now. It’s a beach town, so it’s made up of 3 surf shops, a few souvenir shops/market...
