Old harbour is a fairly well stocked supermarket right on the main street. If you don't see what you need, ask the staff; they are very helpful. You can also get a number of pharmacutecals that might require a prescription back home.
What to pay: Fair market value. Things are well marked and you never get over priced.
All along the main road by the beach there are stands set up selling local crafts . There is a good variety of jewellery and beads and things. We liked to browse after dinner. Bargaining is expected.
What to buy: Jewellery
What to pay: a couple of dollars
just tables along the roads.
What to buy: neclaces and bracelets. The best i saw in all of Cosa Rica were there. The most unique by far and the best looking/exotic. Especially for the price. There are some that want to try to rip tourists off...be VERY wary of them. You don't have to pay the big bucks to get good neclaces. They should only cost about 1500 colones maybe 2000.
There are several good shops in P.V. Prices vary so check around before you buy. Most sell pretty much the same things you can buy anywhere in Costa Rica. There are lots of postcards in case your photos don't turn out!!
The makeshift vending booths that line the road along the beach in town have lots of excellent arts & crafts etc. If you are going to other places in Costa Rica only purchase what you are able to carry around from destination to destination.
What to pay: Most items are relatively cheap especially compared to Canadian & US dollars..
While there are plenty of grocery stores in Puerto Viejo Supermercado Old Harbor is the largest with the best selection and prices
There is grocery store on the main street ...you see it as soon as you get to town . They carry the basics....food and toileteries. They are oopen everyday.
What to pay: Prices are low by our standards
This shop is the best for souvenirs from Puert Viejo. They have a good variety of artwork and crafts. Also some nice pottery
What to pay: The canvas paintings are wondeful and a bargain at $40.00 and up.
