    They MUST be Genetically Enhanced

The mosquitos in Tortuguero can suck the living blood completely from your body, leaving you bumpy, and more importantly, ITCHY. A local friend took me to la farmacia (the pharmacy) where I was told by the pharmacist to take Allegra. I was a little skeptical at first. I had never ventured beyond "No Itchies" before, but IT WORKS!!! I was itch-free within hours, and (unlike in the States) able to acquire endless stocks of over-the-counter Allegra, my own personal healing agent.

    Black Sand and Undertow

    Sunset over the Caribbean shore

Along the beach (Caribbean), there was too much undertow for much swimming (although I waded). One of the other couples went and sat in the surf to cool off, but I wasn't comfortable doing that.

The sand was 'black', not golden or white, and it soaked up the heat from the sun, so it was hotter to walk on than you might expect.

The lodge allows direct access to the beach on the Caribbean coast. The beach may look beautiful, but swimming is not recommended due to heavy waves, turbulent currents and sharks!

Turtles can, however, be observed here between April and October, where you can see the egg-laying and hatching of the green and other marine turtle species.

    Caribbean coast

The sea along this side of the Caribbean Coast is not suitable for swimming. The sea is very rough and there can be strong currents which makes it dangerous for swimming.

Be careful where you walk along the shores of the lagoon and canals, as this area is full of crocodiles and caimans. We literally saw dozens!
