Herradura is much different than the nearby beaches of Jaco and Hermosa. Herradura has relatively no waves. This is probably the reason so many fishing boats are moored near the beach. The water seemed a bit cloudy from kicked up sand. There are warning signs for strong currents which is what might be causing this.

It is also not too popular with sunbathers. Much of the beach is shaded from palms and a large hill. Would not go here to swim.

What I found most interesting about Playa Herradura was the tidal pool. Toward the south end of the beach there is an old weathered lava flow. The erosion over time has created pools and slots in the rock. While I did not find anything too spectacular in terms of wildlife, it did make for some interesting photographs. It is apparent that during high tide, this area would not be accessible. Plan your visit for low tide.

I was there when the tide was all the way out. So much of the rocks were not a slick as they could be. Be careful while walking here. It is best to wear sneakers in stead of sandals.

There is one road into Herradura from route 34. You can take this road to the end where it reaches the ocean. Turn left onto the sand road that runs along the beach. There is parking all along the way. The road eventually ends but the beach does not. Find a place along the road to park and explore the beach.
