    Night

Jacó's high season nightlife is serious business, with people packing the clubs and bars from dusk till dawn. Come low season, however, most hotspots remain relatively empty. Be aware that Jacó has had recent drug problems, and prostitutes linger in almost every bar.

La Hacienda*-located 50m north of the bridge, just past the first side street, above the restaurant of the same name. A young trendy crowd meets for pre-salsa drinks, blasting rock, and reggae. (643 3460. Cover 1500. Beer 500; 2-for-1 beers M-F till 9pm. Open daily 4pm-2:30am.)

Club Ole* - across the street from La Hacienda Bar plays classy salsa and merengue. (Cover 110. Beer 550. Open F-Sa 6:30pm-4am.)

Discotheque la Central- 100m down the side street 100m south of Banco Nacional. After 11pm people head to this classic disco/bar for popular Latin and pop music. (643 3076. Cover Th-Su 800. Open daily 8:30pm-2:30am.)

Pancho Villa's* - toward the southern end of town, across the street from Mexican Joe's. After the other bars and discos close, a largely male crowd stumbles here for pricey grub and gambling. (Appetizers 1000-1500; hamburgers 738. Open daily 10am-5am.)

Ask you taxi driver to drop you in one of those. Everything else is a walk distance.

    Dress Code: Casual.

Beatle Bar: The Blue Marlin Bar of Jaco : )

by happyhourkid Updated Sep 6, 2005

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

The Beatle Bar, Jaco, Costa Rica

The Beatle Bar was probably more "us" than any bar or disco in Jaco. With a giant island bar in the middle and a smaller bar in the back, it was always pretty easy to get a round of drinks regardless of how big the crowd was. In most cases, the crowd was huge. I know I might start to sound like a broken record, but the whores in here were just about as annoying as flies. (It takes a pretty annoyed guy to sit here and tell you that beautiful girls could become a pain in the ass after a while.)

It draws just about every American and English-Canadian, so this accounts for why a majority of the prostitutes in town seem to want to congregate here.

The bar had satellite TV, so we were able to keep up with the Illini basketball season and even watch the Bulls beat the living *** out of the Dallas Mavericks on their own home court. The bar also features 2 pool tables, a foosball table, and blares classic rock continuously!

Dress Code: Fellas, a word of advice if I may. If you go out in Jaco, dress comfortably, and treat the world as if it were your urinal. And I mean sandals, comfortable shorts, and t-shirts/wifebeaters, whatever. If you get all dressed up, like nice jeans, dress shirt, dress shoes-all you are going to do is sweat your jacobs off, and you aren't going to impress the ladies anyhow. What they really want is your money, and you aren't getting any unless you bring some. They really don't give a damn what you look like. I saw Penthouse & Maxim magazine-looking chicks walking out of the Beatle Bar (and the Blue Marlin and just about any other bar) with guys that could fit right in with any bowling team you've ever seen.

Nacho Daddy's: Soon to be the best Disco in Jaco

by happyhourkid Written Sep 6, 2005

    Inside Nacho Daddy's

It won't be long before Nacho Daddy's becomes the disco of choice in Jaco. It is fairly new, as it sits in the first floor of the newly built Galeone Mall in the heart of Jaco.

Although it also serves Mexican food like pretty good nachos and incredible margaritas, it is at night when it really gets its best going for it. It doubles as bar/club with reggae, hip pop and a little bit of house music late at night and, from what I recall, good surf videos on a big screen.

(Pleast note-the picture was taken inside Nacho Daddy's. Notice the skippy towards the right with the dress shirt and jeans on, thinking he'd just go out and start scoring with the local snapper. Needless to say, it was his first day down there from Boston, and little did he know the ladies would tag Rocky Dennis just as fast as they would him, as they are whores and want monaaaay! Now go back to the hotel room and change, beatoff!)

    Pancho Villa's: A Good All-in-One place

Where else, later on at night, can you get a snack to satisfy your munchies, drink some more, dance, and hit the titty bar, called Divas, right upstairs? Why, it's nowhere else but Pancho Villa's.

    Onyx: A relaxing alternative.

    Onyx, Jaco Beach, Costa Rica

Towards the end of the trip we went out to get a gradual start on the night so we settled first at Onyx, which sits on the open air second floor above a Subway and a kosher restuarant of all places. (Didn't realize that Jaco was such a haven for Jews : ) . It is a perfect place to go earlier on in the night when you just want to sit, watch a game, or tell stories while sober and talk strategy later on.

The staff was friendly and drink prices were reasonable, just like every other place in town.

Dress Code: See the recommendation on the Beatle Bar entry.

Discotheque La Central: Want a proper Discotheque?

by happyhourkid Updated Oct 14, 2008

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Appropriately named due to the fact that it is located near the middle of the beach (yet not on the main strip. It's on a side street about a block down from the strip), the Discotheque La Central is probably the best dance club you will find. Nacho Daddys and Pancho Villa's are good, but La Central has a much bigger interior and has a proper dancefloor, not that I need one since I'm a white guy and don't know how to dance anyway.

Dress Code: See the Beatle Bar recommendation.....

There are only a couple places to go in Jaco...just ask a local where to go and there you have it...it's usually chronological order..go here at this time, then here then here..we would always then end up at Nacho Daddy's...kinda nicer with different dance rooms.

Dress Code: Casual beach wear..not bikinis..but tank, skirt, flip flops

  • Anytime after 01:00 a.m: Where is the nightlife

by AnjoLuci Written Aug 15, 2004

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

First night we went to the city was about 10:00 p.m. Thestreet was pratically empty, except for the dogs. Restaurant and bar empty. We couldn't believe! During the day the streets were packed with tourist and locals. Where all this people are hiding?
Later, in our away back to hotel, frustated, we asked the taxi driver about nightlife.
He said that there were two or three places to dance. And that nightlife starts about 1:00 am and goes until 5 - 6 a.m.

Dress Code: Beach place. You got wear casual clothing.
Sandals, flip flops are fine in most places.

Jaco: Night life in the Jungle

    by Matt420 Written Jul 30, 2003

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

There are a couple of bars/nightclubs to be aware of.

The Beetle Bar - known for prostitution (but it's a fun place)

Filthy McNasty's - The name says a lot for this place. It was the only bar I saw that had a sign out front which read "Anyone buying, selling or using drugs will be handed over to the police" writen in English and Spanish. Another fun spot.

Backyard - Located in Playa Hermosa (5 minutes from Jaco) Wednesdays are Ladies Nights. This place gets packed with mostly surfers. Beers run about $2 each.

Don't expect to find Bud Lite or Miller but you can bet regular Budwiser. Drink the local beers, they are pretty good.

Dress Code: Flip-flops, shorts and a shirt (some places the shirt is optional).

I'm sure there are places which require you to dress up a little, but I never found them.

North On The Main street - The Beetle Bar: Where the working girls are

It's just north up on the main road... then on your right. The Beetles Bar always has some kind of action going on... whether you know it or not... and at night 8:00-11:00 you will know what's going on. You are not pressured.... and to be honest.. many surfers and wasters play billiards in the back. It's possibly the most colorfull bar in Jaco... and on the entire west coast of Costa rica also...

Dress Code: Anythang' you want baby....

Nacho Daddy's: House Heads in Jaco

by Johnzane Written Apr 15, 2007

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Coming from the underground dance scene in San Francisco, Burning Man (Opulent Temple, Green Gorilla Lounge, Sunset parties, Deep End, House of Lotus, etc), and local turntable heroes Mark Farina, Miguel Migs, and Ellen Ferrato, I was pleasantly surprised to find Nacho Daddy's, especially after leaving the train-wrecked DJ at the Monkey Bar. I'd lost my personal tour guide, and wandered off with some Tiko to check out a club at the edge of town. We hop a taxi and 5 minutes later are knocking back $3 cocktails in one of the most Shagalicious clubs since Austin Powers. I couldn't believe I was still in CR, but the place was emptying out fast, and the bartenders were anxious. I couldn't get them to call a taxi (no wonder the club closed down), but a couple of older Ticos took pity and dropped me at Nacho Daddy's. It's 2:30am and the place is jammed with hipsters, there's reggae/hip-hop in the back room, progressive house in the front, and more top shelf vodka. I bump into familiar waiters and bartenders from the strip, promoters from Manuel Antonio, and tourists from London, Spain, and California. We exchanged club recommendations, and I found out about Arches Iris in Quepos (which is another adventure..). Everybody spoke English better than my Spanish, which already suffered from Absolute overdose. If you're FIT (Free and Independent Traveler), Nacho Daddy's is as close to a freestyle dancer's club as you get in CR. Pay your $3 cover, grab a drink, carve out a space on the dance floor, and bust a move. If you can dance to the beat, you won't be alone very long.

Dress Code: Regardless of what you might read in these other blogs (some guys lack class, money, and taste), you'll catch the bartender first if you're dressed for Miami CSI than Hawaii Five-0.

    Divas: For the filfthy, dirty.

by happyhourkid Written Sep 11, 2005

Naturally, my friends wanted to take a gander up to Divas, above Pancho Villa's, for a look. It was probably the most run-down strip club I have ever seen (if we're not counting the Show of Shows in Cicero when I was 16 years old.) Very dark inside, sleezy people, and I think I walked out after 2 minutes.

But hey, if that's your thing, have a swell time!

  • Hacienda: Night life in Jaco

    by groove99 Written Nov 1, 2002

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

We started with a great dinner at Hacienda which has a bar with game room and dance floor upstairs. its alot of fun to drink and meet travelers and locals hanging out. At midnight we left here and were off to the La Central disco on the other end of town. This place was fun and great for dancing until 3:30am. There were many local prostitutes hanging out but they were pretty friendly to dance with (free). You dont know who is who as they dress as most of the local good girls do. Afterwards everyone up late in town is sitting at Pancho Villa where you find the best late night food. Its a full size sports bar and resturant with a strip club upstairs. Its noisy and many are surfers preparing to hit the water a few hours later.

Dress Code: anything is cool here.
