Take a look at the rental houses at Finca Estrella (www.southerncostaricaland.com). They are near Pavones beaches but far enough away to be secluded. There is a shared private pool and fantastic high-speed wireless internet also use of the horses is free. The views are incredible and there are lots of squirrel monkeys around.
One of the most enjoyable features of Villa Lapas was a nice rocky brook that ran alongside the entire resort. On our first day there, we teamed up with another couple (Frank and Isabel from Toronto) who had been on our flight/mini-bus trip the night before. In the heat of the afternoon we decided that it was time for some exploring, so we headed off for a wander along the brook, taking our shoes off to enjoy the cool water on our feet as we walked along. It was very quiet in the rain forest with only the sound of the brook as it bubbled along its rocky bed. However, we were soon rewarded with the sight of a flock of white Ibis preening themselves in the river bed. On our way back to the resort after our hour and a half trek, we came across a column of leaf-cutter ants crossing the trail. It was very interesting to watch their single-minded devotion as they headed single-file on their way carrying chunks of bright green leafs!
