When hiking in manuel Antonio park beware of manzanillo trees (indicated by warning signs) -- their leaves, bark, and applelike fruit secrete a gooey substance that irritates the skin.
Just goes to show you you need to cover up when hiking in the jungle.
In most of the countries that I had visited prior to Costa Rica, I found that ATM machines were readily available to spew out money if you needed a little something extra. However, I found that, more often than not in Costa Rica, the machine would spit your card back out without carrying out a successful transaction. As I say, I was not totally unsuccessful, but I never could figure out why some machines would work and others would not. They all had the usual symbols of which card chains they would accept - and Venezuela, South Africa and England had not been a problem! To go into a bank was a major time-consuming exercise!
