The Metro Catedral is close to Parque Central and lovely on the outside and the inside. There was a service at the time we walked past, and we stopped inside for a peek---the congregation was singing a hymn with the Priest leading in a loud voice.
    Built in 1871.

Built in 1871, the Metropolitan Cathedral is the largest church in San Jose. The interior has painted wooden columns pattern, tiled floor and plenty of relief’s. It is distinguished by a small dome and stain glass windows. A side chapel, Capilla de Santissimo Sacramento, is decorated with carved painted flowers and leaves.

the bulky and plain cathedral of San Jose

A big gray church. Drab on the outside. Drabber on the inside. The cathderal is directly across from Parque Central and as we visited on Christmas Eve afternoon we were assaulted by dischordant Central American hip hop music by means of huge speakers placed in all corners of the park. It was not to be an afternoon for silent contemplation of the nativity.

Pope Juan Pablo II visited the Cathedral in 1983.

The National Cathedral is located on Parque Central and is San Jose's largest church. The original structure was unfortunately destroyed by an earthquake. It was then rebuilt in year 1871.
