 | Costa Rica Restaurants | Tips 1 - 10 of 234 | | Everywhere you go you will see roadside sodas or restaurants run by families. You can get a great meal there.. or a crappy one. Beans, Rice and a bit of salad comes with everything in Costa Rica. so don't even think about it when ordering.. it's chicken plus BR&S or Fish + BR&S or some kind of meat + BR&S. Quality varies. Plastic tables & chairs are de rigeur.
What else .. anything with Beans, Rice & Salad. Leave a Comment

Rancho Bahía Gigante has a full service bar and restaurant that served excellent food. Since the hotel was full, they always had a table set up for us out on the patio of one of the cabins. That was "our table". Leave a Comment Theme: SeafoodPrice: less than US$10 » Currency ConverterComparison: less expensive than average

This is a bakery / restaurant that serves a great western style breakfast.. you know eggs.. with some German baking thrown in. We found their fare to be tasty and of decent value. It was a change from the rice and beans that we were eating a lot of. I just read that they are selling the business for $160,00.

We ate at this small resturant on a beach tour that we took. It was a small but nice place. The food was very good. The local food tends to be good, no matter what resturant you eat at. The only thing that was different was the hamburger, the meat was not like back home, but it was still very good.. The best feature was the view. It is located on a beautiful small beach and cove. Sitting at the table and watching the ocean and waves was fantastic.... There seem to be no shortage of places to eat.. Many times the small local place is better than some big resturant...
We had the basic dish of chicken, rice, and vegatables.. Also had a plate of fruit and ice cream including the all day event ,beaches etc for a total of $35 Each, not to bad... As always they seem to give you alot for your money... On the side of the dirt road and overlooking the jungle and Lake Arenal is the Toad Hall, a combination restaurant and gift shop. I remember that the prices were higher than normal and the food was pretty good but not great. We were the only ones there at the time. so it may not be a popular spot due to it's location, about 5 miles outside of Arenal. They sell art from Costa Rican artists: Ceramics by Cecelia Figueres and Oscar Zeledon; Paintings by Ana Barrientos, Ruth Borchers, Fernando Paramo; Woodwork by Barry Beisanz; & Banana paper items by Mauricio Mata, Ana Ligia. As it turns out this too is for sale at $625,000.
Well, my son Colin is a vegan, so travel dining can be an adventure. Beans and rice and salad usually works out well. However, it seems like fruit was the only breakfast option around Arenal. As you can tell from the picture, he was getting a bit tired of that. Leave a Comment

This hotel has an open air restaurant that serves very good food. The wife of the owner is from Singapore so it has some Asian spices in the meals.

Fortuna / Arenal Soda are little snack-bar like restaurants in Costa Rica. You'll find them everywhere, usually small with a few tables and stools at the counter. They'll serve tipical comidas, or typical meals, usually full plates combining rice, beans, salads, plantain and meat or fish, for a very good price, well under 10$ for two peoples including drinks of freshly squeeze fruits. This one in La Fortuna, openned on two side with view on the city and the Rio Burio, served the best Casados in town! You have to try it at least once, for the experience, but hopefully as often as you can for your health, enjoyment of the country and budget!
Fruit juices are fresh and sweet. Casados are huge and tasteful and come with a weird little rice and milk desert (some like, some don't). In fact, the plate was so big, I had to switch to just rice (arroz) and meat (con meat en salsa is the best one I think). Almost everywhere we went that was a bit touristic, Cafe Britt was there. Their publicity: free coffee! In the Skywalk and in the La Paz Waterfall restaurants, for example, places where I would have expect to pay 3$ for a bottle of water, the coffee is always free. No need to say I took advantage of this opportunity!
Coffee. I have to admit, it's really good! And since we are on the subject, I've been told that the Cafe Britt Tour in Heredia (between Alajuela and Barva) is really worth seeing. We didn't had the time to go there, but since I drank so much of there coffee, it seemed only fair to recommand them myslef! See the second website posted below. Leave a Comment

Santa Elena / Monteverde We didn't ate there, but we had to do our laundry. To do so, better here than anywhere else! While waiting for our stinky clothes to become new again, we browsed the books store, magasines stands and the gift shops (great selection of kid stuffs btw). PS on the laundry: some 5$ a night hotel offer to do your laundry for free... Monteverde / Santa Elena In the triangle of Santa Elena, we tried many little sodas but found this one to be our favorite. It's on the second floor of the bakery and you get a somewhat great view of what's happening in town. The service is very very slow but the food is very good and prices low.
Casados again are great. They have a great variety of salads, which I really enjoy for lunch.
