Hotel Iguanazul has a nice restaurant from which you can see the sunset!
Nice atmosphere and right off the pool.

Any fresh fish -- tuna, dorado, mahi mahi!

The food in Costa Rica is very good. The basic beans and rice as in most Latin countries combined with a meat and salad of coleslaw and tomato is your simple ¨plate of the day or Casado,¨ it is called, can be purchased in Sandwich Shops or ¨Soda¨ for approximately $2.50 (U.S.) And, it comes with wonderful fresh fruit juice.

On the mountains above San Jose and the Central Valley, are many restaurants with fabulous views. Ram Luna is my favorite which has a buffet and floor show on Wednesday nights for $28 (5/2001) and other nights the menu is regular and approximately $10. Getting up there may be costly. A hotel and restaurant built like Tara on ¨Gone with the Wind,¨ sits on the mountain at Escazu, a suburb of San Jose. Closer with wonderful views, but costly. Another in Escazu is more traditional and less expensive near the Escazu Church.

The traditional restaurants throughout the country serve food on banana leaves. The area of La Garita, just past the airport, is famous for baked chicken, corn dishes and tortillas with cheese, and foods traditionally cooked over open fires using coffee plants for wood. The flavor is wonderful!

    Pura Vida!

There are many nice restaurants in San Jose. I liked the ambience at 'Cafe Mundo', just a block south of my B & B hotel 'La Amistad'. The restaurant at the Hotel El Presidente is great for lunch.

When you're there, hunt around until you find a restaurant you like.

What I do recommend is to sample the dish called 'Ceviche', made of marinated seafood, accompanied by 'limon acido' and natural fruit juice 'papaya, mango' or whatever you prefer.

Mamma Mia Pizzeria. The picture is from our New Year's dinner.
Very cozy atmosphere. The owner is an italian gentleman who moved to Costa Rica a few years ago. He bears an amazing resemblance to Hannibal Lecter. When he approached our table to ask how was the food we almost thought he would ask for some part of our bodies to add to the menu.

Also just about any soda. When in San Jose I ask the cab drivers to take me to their favorite places. I get to see a lot of San Jose and have never been disappointed in the food.
They cook pizza in a wood oven. The flavor is wonderful.

The pizza is the best I have had since leaving the East Coast at the Heleconia.
The sodas all over Costa Rica have wonderful tico food.

Food is very good and varied in Costa Rica, and it is difficult to recommend one restaurant. There are places at the side of roads, and on the towns, that if you see people in them or cars parked, it is worth to give it a try, even without knowing it. I prefer open air or terrace restaurants, and there are many on any road you take.

A wide range of international cuisine can be found in Costa Rica: French, Italian, Chinese, fast food, etc., but... when I visit Costa Rica I try to stick to Costa Rican cuisine, which is my favourite there.

With abundant oceans on either coast, seafood is a Costa Rican specialty, and not expensive in comparison with Europe, where we live. At least once a day, I either start with a 'ceviche' or 'chucheca' coctail on my meals, or have ceviche as a 'boca' (appetizer) with a nice cold beer. Great combination. Ceviche is a cold dish based on fish macerated in lemon juice.

You’ll also find other native dishes such as gallo pinto, a seasoned mix of black beans and rice, and gallos (not to be confused with gallo pinto), open-faced tortillas, topped with beef, chicken or sausage. Other native specialties include heart of palm, tamales, guacamole, and a vast variety of fresh tropical fruits. Guaro, a clear cane liquor, is the national alcoholic drink. Mixed with coke, sprite or poured inside a coconut with its juice, would be OK.

Forget what this place is called but it's in Quepas (sp?) at the top of the hill overlooking the ocean. The sunsets there are spectacular.

    Palenque restaurant in Cahuita
The atmosphere is great at this restaurant but it is advisable that you reserve your table because there are also a lot of people !!

The squid or camarones (shrimp) with coconut sauce are delicious !!!
The Comida typica are also very good
Great cocktails are also available: try the Pina Colada !!!!

They had a 'sauce' made from olive oil and garlic (and maybe some other spices) that was put on bread and meat. Can't remember the name of it exactely, but it sounded something like 'chimi-munk' (no pun intended). The beef was 'to die for'.
