Father Rooster: Father Rooster was GREAT!

by BigJack123

Father Rooster is located beachfront in Ocotal, Costa Rica. They have awesome seafood! We had lobster there and Mahi-Mahi almost every night. They are sitting right on the sand. This is exactly what a tourist would look for if he were visiting the Caribbean, but, on a beach in Costa Rica. I believe that the farm house that houses the restaurant is a historical building that was put up in 1917. It is all made of wood. The food was better in the Father Rooster than in any of the restaurants in Coco or at Ocotal Resort where we stayed. The service was good and friendly. It is sometimes slow getting the check, but, we found that everywhere in Costa Rica. They don't want you to leave! LOBSTER was great. The Mahi-Mahi too. I tried the tenderloin kabobs, they were as good as back home too...

Cucina Rica

by Dominiques

I don't have much vivid memories of the restaurants in Costa Rica, except the time we ate on the beach at Playa Flamengo (delicious) and the really excellent tuna filled burrito in Quepos, in a restaurant called Monchee (referring to the huge hunger you can get from smoking pot). They also had a very nice, grey male cat at Monchee, going by the same name as the restaurant. Go there if you're in Quepos. The burrito is really excellent.A little downer was our first 'restaurant' in Costa Rica. We arrived in San José and didn't want to eat in the grim looking excuse for a restaurant in our hotel. So we went to a nice and rather posh looking place nearby called the Sportmen's Lodge, which was also a hotel. In the restaurant (and bar at the same time) there were television screens screaming at us (a annoying custom in Costa Rica), but what was really unsettling, was that all of a sudden...

In general: Not a bad meal in Domincal

by ewinchester

Most of the guidebooks I read said that the food in Dominical was awful. We could not have disagreed more. Everywhere we ate was good, we did not have one bad experience. In fact, I think we put on a few pounds.

News Cafe: Good food at good price!!

by nikkky

In San Jose Downtown, one of the best restaurants, and not that much expensive is the " News Cafe". You will enjoy some regular food like pastas or sanwichs, but also some of the Costa Rican specialities. The service is good and the ambience is quite convivial. My favorite dish is "Arroz con pollo" (Rice with chicken). It is made in the perfect point of flavor.

Streetstalls, pinto as breakfast

by sachara

In San José you can find a whole range of varied restaurants and cafetarias for a sandwich, lunch or meal. While travelling in the country, sleeping in budgethotels, we took our breakfast mostly in streetstalls around the corner, like the one at the picture in Puerto Limon. You can just take your morning sandwich, but why not try the local pinto ? Pinto is a mixture of rice and black beans and you can eat it with for example eggs. it's cheap and if you like beans it's tasty as well.

Frank's Place: Good steaks in Santa Theresa

by PelLihi

I visited the place once during the stay in Santa Theresa/Mal Pais. I head a big ass T-bone steak which was perfectly "medium" and not really expensive. It's a typical Costa Rican Surfer style restaurant. Nothing special, but quite good for a quick bite after an exhausting day of surfing. Steak

Shake Joe's Restaurant: Don't miss these Milkshakes in Samara

by PelLihi

I saw the layed-back atmosphere of this restaurant/bar from the beach and was imediately attracted to it.I heard, that this restaurant is famous for its burgers and little snacks. I only had a strawberry milkshake and was stunned! This was one hell of a milkshake - fruity, tasty - perfect!!The mood is relaxed and the music is also good. A definite must-visit. Strawberry milkshake

Eat at the Sodas!

by psutraveler

To really enjoy the food Costa Rica has to offer, stop and eat at the small sodas along the road. We stopped at a small soda between San Josa and Arenal. They gave us a generous portion of food and low cost. The plantains are fantastic and teh rice and beans were great. It is wonderful to eat out in the open and experince the culture. It also helps if you know a little Spanish. In some of these small sodas, the people do not speak English. Purchase a Costa Rican phrase book before going and practice, practice, practice.Enjoy!

Q:  Can anyone recommend something, moderately priced, w/ pool & a/c?

A: Banana Azul is wonderful. You should wait until September and October for the best weather there. Samasati is also very nice, a wellness center.
