Maxi Restuarant: Best Restuarant in town!

by justtravelingthru

It's the best restuarant in town...ok so it's the ONLY restuarant in town, but nonetheless it tops my list of culinary delight for a country not typically known for its food. Here's the scenerio: we biked 20 miles to get there (largest nearby town is Puerto Viejo) amid humid and sunny conditions, apperantly everyone in Puerto Viejo thinks that everything is "within walking distance", but the road finally ended and we found ourselves right in the middle of Manzanillo (a short distance way from the northern tip of Panama). It is a town stubbornly holding on to its past of Caribbean/African descent, where "reggae" is not just music but a way of life and in the center of it all is Maxi Restuarant. Here's a tip: opt for the upper deck - outside seating - the reward; a beatuiful view of La Playa de Manzanillo. Avoid rush hour if at all possible as it does crowd up with tourists, catch it...

The italian

by BEETLE_VERTE

Puerto Jimenez It was recommended to us. The menu had great fish promises. And then there's always the pizza... The terrace in the back is great, rugged wood furniture under huge tropical trees. The dinning room inside is also very smart. I ordered a surf&turf which turned out to be watery shrimps, bits and pieces of dry pork and fried bananas. It was weird and it wasn't all that good. Not bad, but not sectacular. A bit pricey too for what we had in mind.Other customers seemed lukewarmed too

Agua Luna: Great fish in the mangrove

by BEETLE_VERTE

Puerto Jimenez A great big ballroom-like dinning room with linen cloth and candle, facing the ocean and the sandy beach... but for the every night supper, we prefered to sit in the back, on the little porch facing the mangrove. From the little tables ligned on the wood terrace that seemed suspended over the calm water of the mangroves, we could hear birds, jumping fishs or roaming crocodiles. The relax ambiance coming from the bar also sat the tone of the evening. The waiter is very polite and courteous. The menu is varied and included local rice receipes, fish, burgers and some chineese food. The prices are low. But most importantly: the food is delicious!!One set back. The cook is very slow. Very slow. And he cooks one dish at a time only, no matter how long. So my friend and I always received our meals, hmmm I don't know, 15 minutes appart... The first one was almost finished when the...

Ranchito: Exquisite casado & privileged soccerfield view!

by BEETLE_VERTE

Puerto Jimenez A small comfortable efficient affordable and affable familly own restaurant overlooking the soccerfield. Best way to enjoy a lunch in Puerto Jimenez is to sit on the shadeed terrasse of the Ranchito, order a milkshake and watch a game on the soccer field while the ara macaw parrots cheers up the local team... and your casado is being prepared. Casado con bistec without a doubt. They cook the meat very well, with taste and skills. The side order vary everyday and are always good. We had breakfast there once; interesting but not my favorite.

Dos locos: Tasty mexican

Quepos Great little mexican restaurant, open and well design. Good mexican food, good options, generous plate, good quality. Recommended for an inexpensive lunch. Mexican salad and burritos (although the meat was ground beef)

Caoba: American cafe

by BEETLE_VERTE

Tortuguero Cute little wood cafe with the very tall straw roof, gorgeous backyard on the river with a few more tables to enjoy the sunset, raggae music, eco ambiance if I might say with theme posters of rainforest, frogs, fishes, recycling, ... We felt right at home, at least very welcome and taken care of.The menu isn't quite develop, but offers a good alternative to the local food you might be having for a couples or more days. Mainly, it's pizza and milkshakes. and they are both really really good. bring a dictionnary because the ingredients are listed in spanish. Mexican pizza and strawberry milkshake. Exquisite! We came back 3 times, once just for a milkhake.

Miss Junies: A legend

by BEETLE_VERTE

Tortuguero Part of the Miss Junies Hotel, a large dining room is nicely set up next to the cabinas. Family feel, lace curtains over large wooden windows, open door attitude. I could imagine Miss Junies' head poking out the door and yelling at me "dinner!"Miss Junies' cuisine is THE MOST delicious thing I ever tasted in Costa Rica. Local flavor with a divine touch! It's recommended to make a reservation. We just asked Olga to keep us a table... While making the reservation in the afternoon, olga asked us what we would like to eat. I asked for fish and Olga didn't let us down!We had garlic red-fish with an dark orange salsa, cauliflower in some kind of milk/cream/cheese sauce, coco rice and traditionnal cabbage and tomato salad. Divine!

Mariel: Soda with a view

by BEETLE_VERTE

Alajuela Straight in front of the Zoo Ave, the Soda Mariel offers a generous menu and an open view on the rich neighborhood. The service is nice and friendly. Appetizers of Ceviche and Heart of palms salad. Very local! Main course of grilled fish filets. And weird delicious desert of "ayote miel" (I'm not sure of the spelling, I'm not even sure what it is, but I'm sure it's sweet and tasty!)

Maria Bonita: The mexican style!

by BEETLE_VERTE

San Jose We found this little restaurant with the good advice of the friendly staff of the Cacts hotel. I probably wouldn't have choosen this place on my own, since the front of this restaurant was dark and looked abandonned, with only the boss sitting at the end of one table watching sports on tv.But once you enter, the friendly staff directs you to the garden in the back with nice wood furniture to enjoy a good meal, fiesta style, in the middle of the not so charming west neibourhood of San Jose.We spent a large part of our time there watching the news on tv (in spanish but no sounds!), trying to find out what happened in the last few days. Very fun, kind of a puzzle to pass time! We found a mexican influence in the food almost everywhere we went. Here, it's marvelous, an nothing to do with the heavy-sticky-cheesy stuff I knew. I don't remember everything on the menu since there was...

Rest. Bar El Tabacon: Great sports bar & restaurant

by BEETLE_VERTE

Jaco A great little restaurant with a sports bar touch. Open on 2 sides towrd the street. Beautiful design inside with plants and trees. Of course a tv! The ambiance is decontracted and fun. The fishes we tried was great. But since this was our first meal in Costa Rica and we didn't speak spanish, we had to order blindly... with good results but I couldn't tell you now how it's call.

Q:  Can anyone recommend something, moderately priced, w/ pool & a/c?

A: Banana Azul is wonderful. You should wait until September and October for the best weather there. Samasati is also very nice, a wellness center.
