Costa Rica offers many handcrafts on wood and potery. Also textiles. On a big shopping Mall like Multiplaza on Escazu (20 minutes west of downtown San Jose) you can find few handcraft shops, but maybe a little expensive because of being on an uptown area. On Sarchi, province of Alajuela, you can find huge warehouses of handcrafts at reasonable prices. But the best option is probably the marketplace across the National Museum in downtown San Jose, pretty much the same you would find anywhere else, but very unexpensive.
sugestions on souvenirs. Woods, or what some people call: precious woods, some of them considered almost as jewels.. and sometimes just as pretty. There's a very artistic decoration style called 'Sarchi Style' and it's very representative of Costarican Culture.... and of course, buy Coffee.. no matter how dirty or poor the coffee shop looks like, I assure you they have better coffee than any Starbucks. This is a small town in Costa Rica, not too many tourist so it is still interesting to visit. There are many different stores in this town to choose from.
There is a lot of different thing you can buy in these stores. From hammocks to small souvenirs.
The prices differ for the type of souvenir you buy. When buying things from the local stores be prepared to barder because it is very possible that you will get what you want for a lower price then they will first tell you. Leave a Comment Theme: Local Craft

Gift shops with a lot of local crafts in the small city of Sarchi. Majority of the stuff here is local crafts but there is also a lot of the typical touristy stuff you'll find throughout Costa Rica (Cuban Cigars, T-Shirts, Coffee, etc)
If you're going to buy something, some of the crafts at the store from the local area are the ones to give a chance. Don't buy coffee or any of that stuff from these shops, the best place to buy that stuff is at a grocery store, there is one in the city of San Jose on the mall strip.
A little bit less than what you would pay in the states. These shops know how much their stuff costs is the states and they price accordingly Leave a Comment Theme: GiftsAddress: Sarchi

There are lots of shops in downtown San Jose that sell good quality, cheap clothing. I found a lot of in-style business clothes for young women. I got whistled at a few times, but for the most part I was left alone.
In-style business clothes for women.

I hate to say it, but Walmart has taken over the Mas y menos and Pali chain stores. I had a very professional and high quality eye exam in the optical store of supermas (also walmart owned) for $4.00 I paid $160.00 for three prescription sunglasses (one a designer brand). I kid you not. They are the best quality glasses that I have ever owned and at 1/3 of the cost back home. Plus I avoided the cost of an expensive eye exam. Many people get medical treatment and dentistry done in Costa Rica. Have your teeth cleaned. Seriously. It will pay for the trip. Leave a Comment Theme: Department Store

Ox Cart Wheeles by AnitaJRT Everywhere we saw virtually the exact same items for sale, so our advice would be to wait to purchase your gifts for your last day. We are still ordering coffee through the mail from Cafe Britt -- we became that spoiled by the quality. Also their salsa sauce, Linzano, is outstanding. We're on our last bottle and I'm looking to purchase more over the Internet. We also bought a wonderful mask in San Jose from a lovely shop near the Gold Muesum.
Coffee, Linzano salsa, hand carved items -- and forgo the brand new ox cart wheels and purchase one of the older, used, ones. Our only regret is that we didn't bring one of the ox cart wheels home. Leave a Comment Theme: Home Furnishing

by BEETLE_VERTE But a few shops here to gather momentos and gifts in Puerto Jimenez. A cute and of good quality store (with the most looked for attraction: conditioned air!) with friendly staff is located just on the side of the air strip. It's worth a stop to look at books, cratfs and jewel, mostly local and unique. in town, on the main road, a few little shops with the typical arts and crafts, one being located in the back of the Carolina restaurant. And an interesting art store, with great paintings and wood sculptures, located near the bank. It's hard to giftshop in Puerto Jimenez. You'll find hardware, kitchen utenciles, shoes or chainsaw more easily than a cute little souvenirs. A few good pieces, but the interesting one are very expensive.
If you can afford it, the fish wood sculpture are amazing. The painting are gorgeous. Jewel, from the cheap to the best. Leave a Comment Theme: Local Craft
