Buy souvenirs in Sarchi if you get there.

Prices are the same wherever you go but in other towns selections are smaller and most sales people don't want to negotiate the price.

In Costa Rica, get some coffee. The coffee from Costa Rica is very high quality and if you take a private tour you can get the guide to take you to a local grocery store where you can get 1 lb of coffee for $1 US!!! Imagine I pay more than $10 US here for the same coffee!!
If I ever go back I will be bringing about 20 lbs home!

about 425 colones (or $1 USD) per pound

All around downtown San Jose are little fruit & vegetable vendors on the sidewalks. The produce is usually better and cheaper than you can find in the markets.

I buy fruit, avocados (aguacates, they are called here) and other little items for snacking in my room. Try the Costa Rican way of eating mangos -- with a little salt and lime juice sprinkled on the sliced fruit. It's delicious.

Suprisingly, there are a lot of gift shop in Tortuguero. Being such a secluded and small village, it suprised me to find 4 or 5 well furnished stores. It's not the place to find good bargain. Or that special unique local pieces. But a few unique find could be worth a detour if you're not on a boat touring the park or fishing or walking the beach or climbing the mountain or... My point: do the shopping somewhere else and enjoy your stay here.

It's the last day of your trip and you want to pack up on gifts for familly and friends (a little for yourself too), head for the turtle Depot in Alajuela. A big big big store filled to the top with gifts for everyone: hats, t-shirts, jewels, paintings, sculptures, mirrors, furnitures, kitchen utensiles, cofee, candy, papers, pens, books, crafts. I could go on and on!

Everything, althought it could be difficult to find that unique hand-crafted never-seen-before art piece. Everything else: go crazy!

Quality is fair, but not every items are top-of-the-line.

The prices are very good compare to about any other places we've been too (can't speak for Sarchi though, never been).

This is a small shop we stopped at in a town called Flamingo during our road trip across the country.
While this store has some very nice products, shopping is somewhat dissappointing in Costa Rica. Most shops sell the same things, and prices are not as reasonable as you'd think, given the general economy of the country.

Not too far from the Gildar hotel is a big shopping mall. By taxi it takes about 5 minutes and you will pay around 800 colones (2.15 USD).

Next to several shops, there are a couple of banks with ATM, a foodcourt, a supermarket and a movie theatre.

We were there on a Sunday and it was open until 6 pm.

sporting goods, men's and women's clothes, electronics, shoes

You can buy Costa Rica Coffee anywhere but we bought ours at this Coffee Plantation called Siempre Verde while on a 11 Hour Costa Rica Highlights tour.

What else? Coffee!!! If you buy 4 you get to keep a nice Burlap Bag! I bought 8! I dont drink coffee but everyone at home does.

Depends on what kind of coffee but its between $5.00-6.00. I noticed that this place was cheaper than the other places that sell the same thing. They were around a buck less

The town of Sarchi is close to the Poas volcano and is about 1 hour away from San Jose. To get to it you have to pass through the neighboring town of Grecia. Many tour buses stop here after a visit to the Poas volcano. The appeal of this town is that there are many souvenir shops and furniture stores which offer handmade goods. You can find handmade painted bowls, tables, jewelry boxes, statues, crafts and paintings. In fact, in one out of the way shop we watched as a craftsman created a clay statue that could actually be played like a flute. He then played one of his creations for us. There are also shops selling the carreta or traditional oxcarts. These traditional carts were very important in the mid 19th century when they were the only means to transport coffee beans over the mountains and to the coast. Today, trucks and trains are used for transportation and the carts are used in parades and various secular and religious celebrations. They are brightly painted often with intricate designs.
All in all I would save my souvenir shopping for this place.
