This is a small town in Costa Rica, not too many tourist so it is still interesting to visit. There are many different stores in this town to choose from. There is a lot of different thing you can buy in these stores. From hammocks to small souvenirs. The prices differ for the type of souvenir you buy. When buying things from the local stores be prepared to barder because it is very possible that you will get what you want for a lower price then they will first tell you.
This is a small shop we stopped at in a town called Flamingo during our road trip across the country. While this store has some very nice products, shopping is somewhat dissappointing in Costa Rica. Most shops sell the same things, and prices are not as reasonable as you'd think, given the general economy of the country.

Gift shops with a lot of local crafts in the small city of Sarchi. Majority of the stuff here is local crafts but there is also a lot of the typical touristy stuff you'll find throughout Costa Rica (Cuban Cigars, T-Shirts, Coffee, etc) If you're going to buy something, some of the crafts at the store from the local area are the ones to give a chance.Don't buy coffee or any of that stuff from these shops, the best place to buy that stuff is at a grocery store, there is one in the city of San Jose on the mall strip. A little bit less than what you would pay in the states. These shops know how much their stuff costs is the states and they price accordingly
in San José if you go to the Central Market don't stop into the external ring full of shops for tourist, the inner rings you can find local craft at local prices ;-)...in Santa Elena (which is like to say Monteverde) if you reach the paved street , when it turns left, on the right there is a general store where among the everyday stuff, you can find ideas for presents at such a low price compared to souvenirs shops...at Tamarindo my best liked shop was Galeria Paseo de las Estrellas on the main street... Speaking of small presents to bring back, what I found more typical were stuff made of banana or coffee paper and the most unusual were feathers which local artists had painted with images of tropical animals or lanscapes. Then there are lots of wooden object from the most common souvenirs to nice little drawers (those to put on desktops) carved into a piece of tree trunk or big...

Anything with the name Coats Rica written on it can be bought at the shops in Sarchi. From rooms of tee-shirts to hand-painted ox-carts, these shops have all the junk you can imagine. The prices are the better than the prices in San Jose. There are tons of handcrafts and cheap Costa Rica memorabilia. Anything from Tee-Shirts to the famous Sarchi hand-made and hand-painted ox-carts. Everything has set prices, so you can't bargin.

Costa Rica offers many handcrafts on wood and potery. Also textiles. On a big shopping Mall like Multiplaza on Escazu (20 minutes west of downtown San Jose) you can find few handcraft shops, but maybe a little expensive because of being on an uptown area. On Sarchi, province of Alajuela, you can find huge warehouses of handcrafts at reasonable prices. But the best option is probably the marketplace across the National Museum in downtown San Jose, pretty much the same you would find anywhere else, but very unexpensive. sugestions on souvenirs. Woods, or what some people call: precious woods, some of them considered almost as jewels.. and sometimes just as pretty. There's a very artistic decoration style called 'Sarchi Style' and it's very representative of Costarican Culture.... and of course, buy Coffee.. no matter how dirty or poor the coffee shop looks like, I assure you they have...
Simply the BEST coffee in the world. I bought it at the supermarket for $4.00
Where ever you are in Costa Rica, expect to haggle! Don't be afraid if your spanish is a little rusty. It'll help you practice and you can get a great deal!
