Caution! Caution! Hi theft area. Costa Rica will steal your heart!!!!!!! I fell in love with it in the early 90's and have had to go back almost yearly since then to get my fix. Costa Rica will steal your heart and break it at the same time. Petty theft is on the rise unfortunately. It does break my heart to have to report this. Using common sense like not flashing money or wearing expensive jewelry will help you fly under the radar. Use the hotel safes and never, never go off and leave personal items in rental cars. Thieves hang out watching and puncture your tire and then follow you. When your tire goes flat they are right there. Chances are nothing will ever happen to you but theft is on the rise. I have been traveling down there for 12 years and have never had a problem. The theft problems are no worse than you would find anywhere else but it can be a bit more frightening in a country where you may not speak the language. Not to mention the fun trying to get a new passport if yours is stolen. Having a copy would help that situation. Leave a Comment

Typical place to service a local vehicle by BruceDunning, 3 more photos It may not be Easy to get help. From what I noted, there are not any service stations that you as a "foreigner" would trust to get work done, properly and swiftly. It looks like the process is slow, and the quality probably less than desired. Be careful if you drive the roads. There is not AA around out here.

Tortuguero by Helga67 The beaches along the Costa Rican coasts can be dangerous. Along many places there is a strong current. There are no signs along the beaches to warn you for this. Make inquiries where to swim and don't go into the sea where there are no other people swimming. Leave a Comment

live wires in the shower! by yelli The showers have wires that go into the showerheads for the heated water, I'm assuming... Someone in a different tip said not to worry about them, but my boyfriend touched the showerhead while he was showering (not even the wires) and got a shock! Lucky for him it was a small one and there were no more shocks from that one. But just to be safe... don't touch em! Leave a Comment

eye-lash viper by doug48 the rain forests of costa rica abound in many species of poisonous snakes. pictured is an eye-lash viper which is very common in the forests of costa rica. these snakes are very small but their bites maybe deadly. most of the snakes in costa rica are not aggressive but care must be taken to avoid touching or stepping on them when walking through the rain forest. the Fer-De-Lance is an aggressive specie of poisonous snake and should be avoided.

The main transportation form is travelling by chickenbus. Here your luggage will be put on the roof or at the bottom on the bus. Make sure you always keep an eye on your bag each time the bus stops to let people in or out. The best thing to do is to pick a seat at the window where you have a good view on the luggage storage. We have seen some really suspicious guys hanging around our bags. Leave a Comment

Julia Butterfly by no1birdlady We went to Costa Rica in March. I thought that was the "dry season" but it seems that it is a lot more complicated than that. It can vary a lot from one place to another even though it is such a small country. The NW has a fairly well-defined dry season from Nov. to April. This is what I thought was the case for the whole country. Along the S. Pacific coast, the dry season is a month or 2 shorter and July tends to be dry here. In these areas, the rest of the year is rainy with rains usually coming in afternoon cloud bursts. But on the Caribbean slope, the rain is more evenly distributed throughout the year with drier periods in May and June and again in Sept and Oct. SO, what does this mean? If you go to Costa Rica, take your rain coat because you are probably going to get wet. It's also harder to see birds and many butterflies like this Julia I sketched are not out in the rain. Then there is the mud. Some of the trails were awful. The mud was like gumbo and stuck to your boots, made going up or down slopes treacherous, and in general wasn't very pleasant. Take very good boots if you plan to hike. Leave a Comment

truck fording a creek by doug48 before driving in costa rica it must be understood that costa rica is a third world country. outside of san jose the roads maybe in terrible shape. there are frequent mud slides that will wash mountian roads away. some of the bridges have pot holes that can swallow a car. it is not avisable to drive on country roads after dark. you never know what will be around the next bend. also obey the speed limits, the police will fine you on the spot.

Costa Rica, San Jose in particular, is quite notorious for child prostitution. This dangerous practice is becoming more and more common in Costa Rica, even with tourists. Due to the prostitution the violence levels have risen. Tourists are targeted by the prostitutes as clientel and this can be extremely dangerous. BE CAREFUL! Leave a Comment

"Scary" Tarantula, Costa Rica by Paul2001 Okay this should bother you only if you are afraid of spiders. What you should realize is that most spiders are not dangerous and are not aggressive. Even the dreaded tarantula is not lethally poisoness and most certainly will not attack you unless you provoke it. In fact they make an excellent pet. I should issue one warning for the squeamish. I saw numerous spiders in my hotel room in Monteverde and the Rincon de la Verja. This is because the climate in these places is preferred by our eight legged friends. So just get yourself into the mindset that these little big creatures are relatively harmless. Leave a Comment
