If you are planning on traveling by car, be aware that to get to the more remote places (anywhere except San Jose or the main cities) , you will encounter dirt roads in various states of repair. 4WD comes in handy.

If you fall in love with Costa Rica and start to consider buying land consider two facts. 1) Many Costa Ricans are getting very rich buying land, subdividing it and then selling it to foreigners so if you pay too much you many never recoup your investment. and 2) In only 10 days of my visit I read two news articles about land fraud involving lawyers and CPAs. Foreign ladies were mentioned as often being the victims.

    We know >>>
Daddy-long-legs are NOT harmful. Millipedes don't hurt people. And dragon-flies can grow very large so they woo the humans. Praying mantids look beautifully green, still are true predators. Walking sticks are exactly what they look like. And bees aren't that "attack-people!".

I guess I donot have to explain more ... See the insects on the picture; they have been found around the Hotel Villa Caletas, caught, prepared and collected in this glas show-window near the hotel info-desk. Though been raised near the jungle in Papua New Guinea, these insects shiver me because of their seize. You better be prepared ...

The rain forest trails are crawling with ants.
Beware of the army ants, they will bite if they get the chance. Please try not to step on those cute little leaf cutters.

  • If you rent a car, do not leave anything in it if you get out for sightseeing or for the night. Unattended cars are fair game it seems. Make sure you lock the doors and the ignition.
Most come with extra locks attached.

    Bullet Ants!

  • Costa Rica Warnings or Dangers
    by lunabelle
On our last excursion in Puerto Viejo, we went up the mountains of the rain forest to repel through the trees. Our guides were helpful in educating us about the flora and fauna and animal species. At one point, they called us over to point out some very large ants going up a tree. We were not impressed because by now, we were used to the large size of the insects of the jungle. We had already seen butterflies the size of a human hand, cockroaches 5 inches long, and a toad as big as an adult head. So, big whoop... giant ants. Our guide proceeded to explain that these were bullet ants. They are called bullet ants because when they bite you, you feel like youve been shot! I f you are allergic to insects then you may die. If not, you could experience fever, delirium, temporary paralysis of the limb it bit you on, not to mention a nasty scar and a large damper on your trip. I could not believe it , hearing this news because the day before, I had been tromping through the jungle barefoot and with no pants on (bikini)! My angels were really looking out for me! So there you have it- Bullet ants! Whaddyaknow.

In Costa Rica there are good roads, bad roads and very bad roads. I like to think that we drove on all of them and that there are no worse roads than some of the ones we drove on. If you have a car and you are the driver, make sure you feel comfortable driving a stick car on narrow roads, with lots of sharp turns. Do not attempt to pass the vehicle in front of you unless you have really good visibility on the opposite direction traffic. We have seen lots of cars in the ditch because the driver attempted to pass the vehicle in front and lost control of the car while doing it.

Another challenge are the narrow bridges that you encounter while driving. They are wide enough to accommodate just 1 car, so when you come close to the bridge you have to make sure there is no other car coming from the opposite direction.

Costa Rica is a very volcanic area. Often it might look calm and safe which can persuade to go too close to potentially dangerous locations. It is advisable to take the warnings as serious warnings!
