Watch out for slimy critters

by Joboo

In the jungle you need to watch for slitthery characters. Like the Pit Viper, very dangerous snake. heheBut if you want to get in the jungle to see what it offers be observant. Hard to see, but here is a nice monkey flying from tree to tree. He is in the bottom right of the pic.

Drunk bus drivers!

by ashley05p

There are so many buses running throughout the country that it should not be that much of a problem getting around if you speak atleast a little Spanish. However, I missed a bus and needed to get to San Jose and ended up getting on an empty tour bus that was headed up that way. The driver had to "stop for a while", which turned into a 3 hour drinking binge at the bars somewhere along the way. I ended up paying a large fare for a taxi because the driver got trashed and I didn't want to have a drunk driver take me 3 hours north. So just be careful of who you are riding with!!

To Bee Or Not To Bee

by RoyJava

At a tank-station a huge black insect got in the car and caused a lot of consternation. Actually not for its looks as well as the tank-station guy started to push away the insect in a rather agressive way. So, it can't cause a horrible headache, his laconic answer was ... and the tellings about the African Killer Bee, one of Costa Rica's dislikes, started. Mostly Killer Bees do not sting to hurt. But the Costa Rica Killer Bees are different! They have been introduced to and used in the US by wrong ideas. When have a meet with these killers,... just get away! How do you get away from stinging bees?RUN. Best way run is the "zig-zag" running. Run along tall objects (like trees, bushes) so the following bees will get confused. DONOT stand still, or just dive into water to escape the attacking killers!

pick pockets on a local bus...

by sydmar

as we boarded a local bus heading to Puntarenas, a commotion between a man and woman occurred as we were all in the aisle of the bus. yelling and screaming were used to distract everyone and they moved up and down the bus...at this point, we had firmly held on to our bags and proceeded to sit down. but as i was doing this, the man bumped into me several times...in hindsight, in an attempt to take my bag. but i was persistent on holding onto it and he probably did not want to make it too obvious so he left me alone. as the bus left, 2 hours into our trip another tourist on the bus started frantically looking for his bag - nowhere to be found...the bus was stopped, police were called in but no bag. KEEP AN EYE ON YOUR VALUABLES!

Get That Bug Off Of Me!!!

by RoyJava

We know >>>Daddy-long-legs are NOT harmful. Millipedes don't hurt people. And dragon-flies can grow very large so they woo the humans. Praying mantids look beautifully green, still are true predators. Walking sticks are exactly what they look like. And bees aren't that "attack-people!".I guess I donot have to explain more ... See the insects on the picture; they have been found around the Hotel Villa Caletas, caught, prepared and collected in this glas show-window near the hotel info-desk. Though been raised near the jungle in Papua New Guinea, these insects shiver me because of their seize. You better be prepared ...For information, contact Costa Rican Lodges (3540 NW 13th St., Gainesville, FL 32609; tel. 904-373-7118 or 800-451-3711, fax 904-371-3710).

Safety rules

by Helga67

If a police officer insists on stopping you or retaining your documents for no apparent reason, ask him to escort you to the nearest police station to clear the problem. Under no circumstances give money to traffic police or other police officers.Do not drive through or park your car in poorly lit areas (especially in San Jose). Never leave your car on the street; always park it in a safe parking lot. Do not leave any belongings in the car. Sometimes there will be young boys in parking lots of nicer restaurants who will offer to watch your car for you while you eat. It is best to agree and then tip them a few hundred colones. If you see a branch or pile of sticks in the road, slow down. This is the Tico version of a road flare and indicates danger ahead.

Thievery

by antelope01

If you rent a car in Costa Rica, never ever leave anything in your rental car at ANY TIME. Thieves can spot a rental 5 miles away. We met two couples who had there car broken into. One couple was less than 50 ft away when it happened.

Sunburn

by kc0ltv

Perhaps the most dangerous thing facing the traveler in Costa Rica is sunburn. To those from northerly latitudes (the majority of VT'ers): apply sunscreen! Not the weak stuff...STRONG sunscreen. Thanks to Costa Rica, I now know that the sun at 10 degrees north is a whole different character than the same at 46 degrees north!

Flying with laundry soap

by Robin922

While it does sounds funny now, it wasn’t at the time. I carry a small baggie of Oxie Clean, for those little clothing emergencies, like spilling coffee on a new white blouse. As I rule I pack it in my check through bag, however for some stupid reason I placed it in my carry on.While going through airport security, my bag was searched and the lady got real excited and the Spanish started going high speed as she held my little baggie up in the air. She didn’t speak much English, and didn’t know the Spanish word for laundry soap. While it only took a few minutes to clear up the confusion, it felt like hours. Don’t pack anything that is white powder in your carry on!
