Exit Tax

by Robin922

When you are leaving (airport), you must pay a tax! If you don’t have the tax stamp you won’t be leaving. First make sure you didn’t spend all of your money, when I was there the tax was about $17.00. Also don’t buy it from the guy on the sidewalk unless he is wearing the correct ID. There are scammers who will try to sell you fake ones.

Dangerous oceans

by Helga67

The beaches along the Costa Rican coasts can be dangerous. Along many places there is a strong current. There are no signs along the beaches to warn you for this. Make inquiries where to swim and don't go into the sea where there are no other people swimming.

Tico drivers: A force to be reckoned With

by kc0ltv

If you come from a "sane" driving country (e.g. the U.S., Canada, etc.), beware of local drivers! Tico drivers are crazy and may not stop for you if you are a pedestrian due to local custom. It is essential that you always watch out, lest you want to end up in the hospital with a broken leg or worse.

Active volcanos are never safe

by lotharlerch

Costa Rica is a very volcanic area. Often it might look calm and safe which can persuade to go too close to potentially dangerous locations. It is advisable to take the warnings as serious warnings!

In summer, rivers could be in flood

by Nansen

Summer is the raining season for all of the Pacific region (in caribbean, all the year is a raining season). So be careful, roads in Costa Rica are usually in bad condition, so when rivers are in flood because of heavy rain, you can find some of the roads are cutted. In this case, i had to cross the river befores the car to see how deep was it.

Road Hazard

by grandmaR

Because the roads are so bad, you should consider renting a 4WD or at least a vehicle with good road clearance (no low slung sports cars). Bob said it was like a cobblestone street with many cobbles missing. You have to go slow because otherwise you risk breaking an axle. Also if it has rained, you don’t know just how deep that puddle you see is.

Theft from a Parked Car

by grandmaR

We didn't have a car in San Jose - and I would advise against that in any case. But when we did have a car, we were advised to park in a guarded lot because we were told that there is theft from parked cars. We parked in a guarded lot on Sarchi (and you tip the guard when you leave), but where there was no lot, like here in Zacario, one of us stayed with the car while the other one walked around town. I think this is more of a problem near San Jose than out in the country. We didn't bother with this when we were in Arenal or Monteverde.

Don´t put your hand in water!!!

by Nansen

Costa Rica is a paradise for nature lovers, but walking in the ofrest is not a game. You should not go outside of the marked path and it´s also better to travel in the forest wuith a guide. There are lots of dangerous and poisonois aniamls and plants. (snakes, ants, crocodiles...)Costarrican guides (Ticos) are excellent in their explanations and often show you animals and plants otherwise you don´t look at them.

Ice cream scam

by BEETLE_VERTE

We knew about it and still got caught. You read about this kind of scam and you are sure you would never got caught, that this plan is so stupid it would never work.Well, it does. You're in vacation, you're elax, you're happy to meet friendly local peoples... And then a little man comes around with tissue paper and warn you you are dirty in the back. Some kind of bird poop or melted ice cream. You take the tissue papers, so happy to have found a gentleman to help you. This is when the gentleman opend your bag and run away with your passport, money, camera or other precious belongings. Fortunately for us, our gentleman wasn't very good and his pickpocketing was obvious enough to stop it. He ran away before getting anything. We though back on the event and realise that we missed every warning signs. And didn't do the obvious. So just be warned. It is going to happen, in the more obvious...

Don't mistake rivers and ditches for roads

by Anita_Porec

well, I'm sure you won't if you're not me...but - driving thorugh the unpaved mountain roads, it's pretty difficult to tell a road from a dry river basin. So, this is how I got stuck and realized it wasn't a road after all.....
