the basics

by Malecka

If you feel like enjoying the Caribbean sun, the timeless sound of the legendary salsa and son songs, if you feel like getting to know Caribbean people that are simply special, if you are willing to get to know a country that has lived the last 50 or so years "somewhat" differently, without being judgmental, then by all means, embrace the true Cuba. This wonderful island offers a lot to the visitor... At least to the one who decides not to spend the days and nights in a Varadero resort, completely isolated of what Cuba really is.I strongly suggest a visit to the capital, La Habana (emphasis on the old part of the city, as well as Centro Habana and Vedado), a visit to Trinidad, Cienfuegos and also, if you have the time, the eastern part of the country, Santiago de Cuba and the province of Granma (Bayamo, for example). walking along the Malecon... in the morning, during the day, at sunset,...

10 days in Cuba?

by RKyle

Hi, ten days is a little tight for for what you propose!I spent 5 weeks this summer there and did Havana, Playa Larga, Cienfuegos, La Boca(Trinidad), Santiago de Cuba, Holquin, Camaquey, Remedios and Santa Clara and the only conclusion I came to is that I want to go back to all of them.I assume you are landing at Santiago de Cuba, be sure and go to El Morro, because of it's location I find it hard they were unable to defend it! Go for lunch on the roof of the Casa Grande Hotel and drinks on the terrace there at night before going across the street to the Casa de la Trova or across Parque Cespedes to the Casa de la Musica. The Tropicana is ok and cheaper than Havana.Try Holquin and it's three plazas for Jinetro free touristing. The one cuc bus tour is a bargain and climb the view point, Gibarra is a nice side trip.Stay at Villa Lourdes with Elvis (Rodriguez Gonzales)...

I'm done!

by Diwali70

This was my 3rd time to Cuba and my first to Varadero. I absolutely hated every minute of it. I have been to Cayo Coco and Holguian to 4 star resorts in the past..... This time I went to Oasis brisas del Caribe. It was HORRIBLE! The food was disgusting (absolute slop) and the staff were only nice when you were tipping them. I changed my room 3 times and it was still gross! First one was about a 1/2 a mile from the main resort and had a filthy pool. The second room had outlets that were blowing up and sparking ( causing all the lights to go out) and the third room was infested with roaches and ants. I was also there during a hurricane which did not allow me to use the one and only reason I go to Cuba.(beautiful beaches). I am never going back. I would rather pay THE SAME money and go to Cancun or Dominican. I am done with Cuba. There is just too many other options out there. I am sick of...

New Beer!!!

by RickL

There is a new beer in town and this one is a bit of a compromise between Bucanero and Mayabe. A bit weaker than Bucanero, my favorite, and has a bit of a bitter aftertaste. It's called Cacique. That's the Cuban word for a native that is a loner in the mountains. It was a big hit with the Cubans I know there but that may be because Iwas paying for it all as part of my daughter's Bday party!

Cuba Stamp in US Passport

by risse73

If you're going to Cuba either legally or illegally and you're a US citizen, you may want to forgo having Cuban immigration officials stamp your passport to avoid future problems. I, for one, am an American citizen who traveled to Cuba legally in 2004. The travel procedures were stringent as they are now. We departed from New York en route directly to Havana. Even if our travel was permitted by both governments, we (at least I did) opted to forgo the Cuban stamp in our passport. The Cuban immigration officials understand all the politics and will gladly oblige. Good luck! The ride through the countryside and hiking in the Sierra Maestra.

Money Issues

by risse73

We were in Cuba in 2004 and brought cash only. Being Americans in Cuba, we were limited in the cash we could bring and equally limited to the things we could buy. I've heard that there is a high commission fee for cash transactions via credit cards. Also, be forewarned that your credit card/ATM transactions will definitely be rejected if said cards are issued by American banks. American Express cards and its travelers cheques are not accepted as well as VISA/MASTERCARD issued in other countries if they happen to be connected to a larger American-based company. Better be safe than sorry...I strongly suggest for you to bring enough cash to last you throughout your vacation. Good luck & enjoy Cuba! The warmth of its people, rich culture, and laidback way of life. Also, the tropical atmosphere.

Havana

by RKyle

See my home page for some good casas for travelling ladies. You can stay in casas on the Playa de Este 15 minutes from Old Havana and combine the beach and Havana day trips and nightlife. The Tropicana is a good mid range hotel across the street from the beach and they have a free bus into Havana at 9:30am with return at 2:30pm. Check out the beach hotels throught "Cuba Junky" and you can check the rate in any currency and book online. Also the red tour bus stop is across the street from the hotel which for $5 cuc will hook you up for tours of Havana.See the "Nine O'clock Gun" show.Go to the Oasis nightclub on the Prada near Parque Central for Cuban dancing, etc. and say "Hi" for me to the all girl band the "Huricane de Caribe" that plays there on some nights.Go to the "Salon Rojo" near the Hotel National, often there is some big name groups playing there.Remember: Ask for reciepts when...
