Cuban Food in La Habana

by cochinjew

I second Pedmar's opinion and also add, you dont add CHEAP when you are discussing food in Cuba especially for the tourists.. even paladares which are private places to eat in the houses or modified places (not truly restaurants).. have become very expensive in recent years..there are good government run restaurants where you might be able to eat well for about 10 cuc, as are the places in the ChinaTown part of La Habana. I adore Havana, but let me tell you the food is not the best part... best food is when someone invites you to their home..La Roca in VEdado near the Hotel Nacional, you can eat for about 10 cuc, artechef in vedado has good food also.. It may be strange to hear this from me, but the best CUBAN food I have had in the last ten years has been in Miami, eventhough I have had EXCELLENT food in Cuba..(not particularly Cuban) How many would you like to hear? this endless feast...

Pregnant traveller in Cuba

by cochinjew

As a doctor working in Cuba, let me assure you that the prenatal care in Cuba is rated one of the best in the world.. in fact the mortality rates are much better than countries like USA.. there are no tropical infections to be afraid of, there are no waterborne infections in the areas you would be staying in. If you want, will even get you a free consultation with a top Gynaecologist! he he.. viva Cuba.. we have lots of foreigners seeking medical attention but no ways of charging them unless they go to the designed hospitals and clinics.. you should experience no problems..

American Dollars in Cuba

by cochinjew

You cannot use credit cards issued by American banks. American dollars are charged 21 per cent to be changed into CUC (the money you need for everything as a tourist), MN is cuban Peso which is about 24 to 1 CUC.. there are some uses for that but in general very little for the tourist.. you can buy coffee for i peso or peanuts for i peso at road side stalls for example.. remember for 100 dollars you get 79 cuc. they charge 11 per cent to charge any other currency. Havana is maginificent and it wont disappoint you. Ancon is just a beach resort outside (very much outside Trinidad).. with very little contact with cuba or cubans.. if you can stay somewhere a bit more in touch with Cuba.. if you need any special information on Havana or cuba, please let me know..Sorry i wont be in havana until about 14th feb, otherwise would have invited you for a cup of coffee.. all the best to you Cuba and...

Food shortages

by RKyle

Just return from Havana and Santiago do Cuba and the only shortages we ran into were bananas and tomatos which according to our hosts was because of hurricane damage to the crops, but this shortage seemed to affect only different areas in the same cities. We ate very well in the casas. We passed through the hurricane hit area at night on the bus(sleeping) so were unable to view any damage. The close family life of the people.

Havana the capital of Cuba

by cochinjew

Vedado is safer than havana vieja safer than centro habana, then again everything is relative. Havana is possibly the safest city in the americas including north central and south america..dont worry about resort travellers, we who spend a lot of time in havana, not only avoid them but we also avoid back packers..unless of course we can make a dollar out of you..in vedado there are places to eat, nightclubs to go, jazz, bolero and salsa. even if you are spending the evening in old havana it is quite easy to get back to vedado..i am partial to vedado because i live there part time! Most of the days we have something fond to remember..such are friendships in cuba..

Travelling alone and costs in Cuba

by AlperIst

Hi Sabrina,I am just back from Cuba, travelled there 3 weeks alone and independent, without any packet and hotel reservation.I stayed in many towns in Casa Particulars (pensions) from 15CUC to 25CUC. Viazul, the bus company for tourists go most of the towns. If you eat in modest CUC cafeterias and restaurants you can get full for 3-5CUC. In a luxury hotel's restaurant it can cost 20CUC. If you find a restaurant with local Peso like I did several times, you pay around 15Peso (0.6USD) for a simple meal or 50 Pesos (2USD) for a rich meal with a lot of food, drinks, waiters with suits serving, clean, air-con, modern.Street Pizza for 5 Peso (0.2USD) is also a good cheap alternative to get full.1CUC (supposed to be tourist money) = 24 Peso (local money) = almost 1USDMaybe I should add that I have never been to Varadero tourist town but travelled to the real cities. It may be more expensive...

weather in cuba

by florry

I have been going to cuba for the last 5 years and i went mostly around the 10th january and this year i stayed until march. This was the first year i seen it raining in Cuba .It didnt get cold and i had plenty swims .In the evening i carried a cardian with me but never had to use it.I think its better for you to go in febuary..november you can still get some sturms..dont worrie..you will have a fantastic time..check out my pages for some more info My fondest memory of cuba is the music in the air day and night, the smiling friendly people, the walking along the malecon..or the streets, the smell of fresh fruit, pizza.., sitting down for a mojito while watching the busy people who do a lot out of nothing.I miss of course the weather..driving around the countryside..sharing cuban food..cooking for my friends..

Something to do

by RKyle

Fly into Holquin and head for Santiago by bus, rental car or private car. Visit the roof top terrace at the Casa Grande, El Morro, and the Casa de La Trova at night. Try staying at a Casa and enjoy the people.

Laptops

by RKyle

No problemo!, I took my new laptop to Cuba in April and used it at the Hotel National and Melia Cohiba Hotel connecting to their wireless system with no problem. There were numerous people doing the same. I did not try to hook it up to the internet in a Casa I stayed at but I used their dial up system on their computer.

Havana- Vinales visit

by RKyle

Check out my reply to Marc97, June5, Cuba Forum about booking Casas in Havana, don't be afraid to walk as the casas I suggest are within resonable distance of the Malecon, La Rampa or Old Havana and are from $25 to $30cuc. Phone ahead or email if you can, at least phone from the Airport( the bathroom porter will have Cuban pesos for the phone)Change $200 to $ 300 at the Airport, make sure you get a receipt and count your $$ at the counter. Watch the Cabbies as they will try to take to a Casa of their choice and it will cost you a extra $5cuc kickback to them. Check out the Playa del Este outside of Havana for beaches and with your time frame head for Vinales. Visit the Hotel National for the view, lunch and $$ exchange, wireless internet there and at the Melia Cohiba which also has a wicked cigar shop (try the Dedamas cigars) have a coffee, etc. at the glassed in bar in the Hotel Riveria...
