People, Accommodation, & Gift-Giving

by risse73

Cuba is a beautiful country with lots to offer its visitors. The people are warm, genuine, and friendly. I hope you get to interact with locals during your stay there. It may be cheaper to stay in "casas." This type of accommodation definitely saves you money-money that is best spent on other travel needs and gifts that you should bring (e.g.,school supplies, dental/medical supplies, etc.) for donation to a local school, orphanage, or a social service organization. Enjoy!

Cars, hotels and favourite places

by DB08

Car hire is not a problem - just take care to read contract and make note of any scratches, missing aerial etc. There are very few road signs or speed restriction signs, but the roads have little motorised traffic, there are petrol stations on main routes and plenty of people willing to give you directions. If you do pick up hitchers make sure all luggage is out of reach. A good alternative to car hire is to use the Viazul buses, very comfortable and reliable, although not terribly frequent. They have a website if you google Viazul. There are lots of hotels in Havana, although few in centre have pools (Sevilla, Nacional do, but are expensive) - we treated ourselves to 1 night at the Sevilla and loved the food and ambience, cost approx £70 for 2 people B&B, but you can stay for much cheaper in boutique hotels in Havana Vieja or even cheaper in peoples homes (Casas Particulares). Most hotel...

Cuba

by Arc86

@Rezguy:I never wanted to say that Cuba is some kind of utopia to me or that I would change my life with a Cuban. Far from it! As a traveler I was very disappointed and don't plan to visit Cuba again soon. Also I didn't want to affirm that Cubans are satisfied with the political situation or the standard of living there. I just wanted to say, that in my opinion (after what I've seen during my three weeks), there are not only negative sites about the communist system in Cuba as it's been told so often. I didn't notice that Cubans are in anyway poorer than the citizens of most other countries in Latin America. I don't wanna say they aren't poor, but I'v never seen anyone suffering by hunger or diseases like I saw it in many "capitalist" countries of the third world (Peru, Ecuador, Kenya). The same counts for the rate of criminality, which seems to be exciting low. I know you can't find a...

Cuba

Back to the issue:I don't think you have to flight over Mexico if you are from England. There are direct flights from Madrid and Paris..and probably from London too.And it is definitely possible to rent a car. It's shurely not cheap - but beside the price they shouldn't be any barrier. We met someone who rented a car...really seemed to be an advantage.Once I read somewhere you can get in troubles if you having an accident with a rented car in Cuba. You would have to pay everything and to stay for months in the country in a court case. But I disbelieve that's true. There also exists some rumours that you can get arrested by the police without a reason if you don't carry a copy of your passport all the time with you.Once you've found a casa particulare it is no problem to travel from city to city. Normaly your hosts have a friend (who also is host of a casa particulare) in your next destiny...

Cuba

by Arc86

There would be much more positive statements if Cubans would have a better possibility to go to the internet (which they haven't because USA deny them the access to main net).I know you're someone who's family escaped once from Cuba - and I respect your point of view about Castro. I'm not pro-Castro. In my opinion he's a dictator who inhibit a democratic system in Cuba and oppress the Cubans. But there are also things that are positive about him. During my holidays I've never seen any homeless or hungry people...or even people in bad clothes. I've met people who were frustrated about other things. Not having the possibility to travel to other countries, to buy things like a Computer or a new car for themselves. I really tried to get away from the tourist places to see the real Cuba. If there is really another "real Cuba" Castro must hide it very good. But why don't you go there for...

Real Cuba

by Arc86

Well I'm tired of arguing with exil-cubans about the "Real Cuba".I've been there...indeed only for 3 weeks but I it was enough to see the real Cuba. This country has one of the best healthcare systems in Latin America and the Cubans can use it for free. Everything else is a propaganda lie of the anti Castro community in U.S. At all events...today it's like that.Tourits can use it as well, but have to pay immense bills as with everything in Cuba.Just for example..you don't find any Cuban with glasses. State is offering to all of them contacts and in worser cases eye operations for free. I know you gonna tell me diffrent, but Cubans there told me so.

- We dont like all inclusive type holidays and like to hire a car, hopefully we can do this???and travel around.YES, U can hire a car, not only in Havana but also in almost any other important city of the country. Prices start at about 35CUC/day and limited km. Try RentaCar and Havanatur- Where would be the best place to fly from after leaving Florida to get to Cuba?Usually people flight from Cancun or Canada. Just look for the best offer and get it.- Would like to spend 4 days in Havana...can anyone suggest some nice places to stay there?Havana Vieja, Centro Habana and Vedado are the best 3 municipalities to stay. My recommendation is to stay in a "casa particular", a private home of cubans that U can rent for about 15-20CUC/day. There are many websites with lot of info of many houses to rent.- What would be the cost of a reasonably nice hotel. I have no idea what hotel standards are...

Holidays in Cuba

by Arc86

I've been to Cuba last summer with mainly your ideas.First thing I realised was that this way of travel (cheap, without commitments) is nearly impossible to have there. There are some possibilities, but you are very constricted. (Tourist) restaurants are always very expensive..as well as tourist hotels, hire cars and tourist puplic transportation.(Cuban) hotels are forbidden for non-cubans (like in the opposite way). In case of restaurants, beside the expensive ones I only found very little "fast food" restaurants. The best way to stay cheap is to sleep in "casas particulares" and also eat there. 20-25 CUC the night, dinner 5-8 CUC.By the way I wouldn't spend much than 3 days in Havanna. (I would recommend you to stay in a smaller city like Cienfuegos). Not because its dangerous, but because the people there are very exhausting, even for Latin American countries. In the tourist area (with...

CUBAN SOCIETY

by LoriPori

I never really gave it much thought before , but after our trip to Cuba, I wondered about CUBAN SOCIETY enough so to read more about this fascinating island. I'd like to share with you some of the things I learned and hope they will be interesting to you also.EDUCATION IN CUBA:Before and during the present government, Cuba boasted some of the highest rates of education and literacy in the Americas. The Cuban States, through tax receipts, subsidizes education for all Cuban citizens including Universityeducation. School attendance is compulsary from ages 6 to the end of secondary education - age 15 and all students wear school uniforms with the color denoting grade level.HEALTHCARE IN CUBA: The Cuban government operates a National Health System and assumes full fiscal responsibility for the health care of its citizens. Cuba has long ranked high in number of medical personnel.SPORTS IN...

LA HABANA

by LoriPori

The Capital of Cuba and a UNESCO World Heritage Site Havana or LA HABANA is also the major port and leading commercial center of Cuba. With 2.3 million inhabitants, Havana is the largest city in both Cuba and the Caribbean region.Havana is located 106 miles ( 170 km ) southwest of Key West Florida, on the northwest coast of Cuba.I thoroughly enjoyed strolling through the different Plazas like - San Francisco - Plaza de Armas - Plaza de la Catedral and Plaza de la Revolucion.I found Havana to be a charming city to visit. It's like it is frozen in time with its vintage cars and Barocque-style buildings. Some of the once grandiose buildings, built during the city's more prosperous times, lie in disrepair, but still adds to the charm of the city. Hans and I are so glad that we decided to take a day tour here.
