CUBAN CURRENCY

by LoriPori

The Cuban convertible peso CUC is the sole currency accepted for payment of goods and services. It is no longer at par with the US dollar. Foreign currency can be exchanged at Cadeca exchange booths found in Cuba's international airports and in urban areas. as well as in banks and major hotels. Exchange of US currency is subject to a 10% fee in addition to the exchange rate difference. Canadian currency - cash and traveller's cheques with the exception of American Express, may be exchanged for CUCs without the 10% fee. CUCs can be exchanged for Canadian dollars at international airports before leaving the country. It is not possible to exchange CUCs outside of Cuba.NB My hotel offered 90 CUCs for 100 Canadian dollars. A little bank kiosk in the Hotel offered 94 CUCs for 100 Canadian dollars. I changed just what I needed for our tour to Havana, two departure tax of 25 CUCs and a bit of...

FOOD:Cuban and International dishes are served. Chicken, fish and pork are the usual meat dishes. Hot vegetables are not as plentiful as in Canada. Generally there are ample supplies of lettuce, tomatoes. All kinds of tropical fruits (papaya, pineapple, grapefruit, oranges & Guava) are available along with yogurt and juices. The National food is called ajiaco ( a root vegetable stew cooked with meat, especially pork). Other typical foods are lechon asado en pua (broiled pork cooked over an open fire), tachinos, chaninos or tostones ( fried bananas) , moros y cristianos (rice and black beans), congri oriental ( rice and red kidney beans), picadillo a la Habanera ( Havana mincemeat ) and pollo a la barbacoa ( barbeque chicken).BEVERAGES:Cuban rum and beer are the most popular drinks. The Wonderfull Island...

by amed71

In Havana, just walk, meet people, talk with everyone, eat at the family's attended "paladares", ride a COCO TAXI to OLD HAVANA, and enjoy the wonderfull old buildings and the small streets. You must drink a MOJITO at the Hotel Terrace where ERNEST HEMINGWAY use to live.Sit an entire afternoon at the CAPITOLIO stairs seeing people passing by.You must enjoy a Icecream at Plaza Copelia too. At nigth, walk at la Rampa to the Malecon, but be carefull if you are a little weak for the Caribean Beauties, because you'll be sorrounded literally by them. Drink a couple of cold CRISTAL or a BUCANERO cuban beers. Take your time to visit the MUSEO DE LA REVOLUCIONDont forget to visit the huge PLAZA DE LA REVOLUCION and the Goverment building complex.theres so much to see in LA HABANA, that the time fly away even without nottice.DONT FORGET TO visit the cuban provincia, small towns like TRINIDAD, an...

Cuba FAQ:

by tommyimages

Q: Did you have to stay in the official hotels, or was it easy to get into a family run Casa? A: When you enter the airport in Havana, you will have to list a state run hotel as the place you are staying at for the first couple(?) of nights (they want you to give money to Castro). Sometimes they will escort you to make sure you are actually staying in these places. Most of the time they won't bother though. You will have no trouble getting a casa particular. As soon as you step foot in Havana, jineteros (hustlers) will try to hook you up with a casa or a paladar (private restaurant). Their fees are tacked onto your rent or dinner so politely tell them you don't need any help if you want to save yourself a few dollars. In dealing with jineteros, one of their first questions will be "how long have you been in Cuba?" At which point, you should tell them over 2 weeks or else you will be seen...

I highly recommend the a great book covering a trip through Cuba by Paul Myers. It's called What I Did n Cuba and its a free eBook available here: http://www.lulu.com/content/423819Amercian Spy novelist James Bruno said, "Mr. Myers's tongue-in-cheek travelogue of his decade-old visit to Cuba is a rollicking good read. His style reminds one of that great travel writer, Temple Fielding."The book description is as follows:From landing in Havana, hoofing it all the way down to Trinidad and back in a rented Mexican built Nissan (with special insurance on the tyres in case they get stolen by raft builders), the author vividly describes his hellish time in the Caribbean's biggest island nation. Like a dumbed down Bill Bryson or a poor mans Paul Theroux, this is a travel tale of three weeks in the Sunshine Socialist State where extortion, confrontation, dolphins, kidnapping, appalling food and a...

Old cars

by Helga67

Nowhere in the world you will find so many old (American) cars as in Cuba. It's like going back in time. It makes Cuba special. But how come there are so many cars?Well since Fidel Castro is the 'boss' of Cuba, the Americans and most of the rest of the world have put an embargo against Cuba. So since the 50s no new cars have entered Cuba (except for Russian cars during the friendship with the USSR). So the Cubans had to maintain their car very well in order to keep on driving. Fidel also ordered that no "oldies" could leave the country (for car collectors). So I guess whenever Fidel will no longer be in power a lot of those oldies will be sold for many $$ to car collectors all over the world and Cuba will lose its special brandmark.

Music

by Helga67

Music is the soul of Cuba and can be heard everywhere: on the street, in a pub/restaurant and in a Casa de la Trova. Casas de la Trova are located in almost every town. Local bands come here to play their music and the locals (and tourists) to listen to the music and dance.Cuban music is influenced by the Spanish colonists , but also by the African roots of the slaves. Together with dance it is an important part of the daily life of every Cuban.

Cuba has a new currency

by cochinjew

As of June 1, 2003, Euro will become legal tender in Cuba, starting with the vacation spots and eventually spreading to all the island.so now we have four currencies in circulation.cuban pesos between 26 and 28 to the one american dollar. can be used at roadside attractions like coffee for 1 peso, ice for 1 peso, pizza for 5 to 6 pesos etc. foreigners will find it of little use, unless you wish to change your dollars and euros and give the cuban pesos as gifts.a family of four can improve their dramatically with an additional income of 400 pesos or 20 us dollars which ever is easier for you to donate. Please do not give your newly found "friends" more than that..you as a visitor will be distorting the system and be contributing the degradation of the cuban culture.american dollar. the best currency to have. cuba is the only country which uses the currency of its enemy of its own.now...

Traffic in Cuba

by russian_yaz

3.About traffic. Is traffic in Havana and other big cities very heavy all day or maybe in the morning only? The traffic is not so heavy. At least if U compare it with other countries. The street with heavier traffic in Vedado, Havana fo example, is 23rd. But don't worry, U can drive without problems, many tourist do it. I used to go usually in bicycle everywhere in Havana without problems. The worst time is off course at morning and in the afternon between 3 and 6pm. In the pic U'll see the streets U asked for. Also the naming of the streets in various neighborhoods of Havana like Vedado, Miramar and Playa is easy. Starting from 23, the parallel streets going in the sea directions decrease the number and are only odd numbers. In the other direction they increase. The perpendicular streets are named by the letters of the alphabet so starting from G going to the sea the next letter is H...
