Currency....CUC, cuban pesos and others...

by russian_yaz

QUESTION: There are two currencies convertible pesos (mainly for tourist) and cuban pesos (mainly for the cubans or getting some streetfood etc.. for tourists as well). The lonely planet said that we should bring us dollars but I'm reading the opposite over here so is it better to bring euro's? (would be easier for me as well) And some last questions: - How do you see the difference between convertible and cuban pesos? - How do you see that the indicated price is in convertible or cuban pesos? It's not that foreigners are not legally allowed to use cuban pesos, just that as a foreigner you won't have any luck trying to get away with paying what the locals pay. There is at least one situation in which the government does not permit foreigners to use cuban pesos, and that is for plane / train fares and to enter in many touristical places as museums, excursions and others. Cubans pay in...

1- Are beaches on Playas del esta clean? Are sea clean in front of that beaches? Is there any differences between beaches Playa del Este about cleanest? Maybe Tarara and megano are cleaner then Santa Maria?Yes, these beaches are clean. They are very tourstics so they keep?em clean. Tarara and megano in the contrary can be somwhat filthy. But all this depends on the day. Maybe U catch a day when everyspot is lean or could be a little bit filthy.2- What is about thieves? Can i leave my stuff on the beach when i go swimming? I read that is not 100 percent safe! But i can leave my stuff in scooter and go swimming? Can i go close to beach on the scooter? It is true. The thieves problem is not 100% secure . So better when swimming don?t leave on the beach anhitng with value. Just take your towel and beach shoes so if something happens U don?t loose anything with value. But this is not usual to...

1- Can u recommend me few places for good nigtlife? I prefer after midnight disco club with modern and dance music where i can meet girls from 18-25,30,? Before midnight i like slowly music (like Cuban music) Can u told me names of few disco clubs and few bars? What is with Copacabana Disco, that is near Commodoro hotel in Miramar?.Read through my night tips on Havana travel page. There are many places U can choose from. But usually any disco will be full of young people like the ones U're looking for. Copacabana is ok, not far from Comodoro. It has disco, restorant and some boutiques I think... never went there. There U can listen to most of the best salsa groups playing right now in Cuba. This place is usually very crowded with tourist and maybe some cubans.2- Will Cuban police stop me often if i rent scooter? Is traffic in Havana high density or low?U can go everywhere in the scooter,...

1- When is high tourist season in Cuba? is possible that in April i couldn't find any casas for single? I think that is good idea that find casa on net and reserve one.April is the ending of the high season. Don't worry about finding particular house, there will be always one for rent, there are many in Havana and everywhere all around Cuba. Offcourse on high season (october-march) it is not easier to find maybe the one U're lookingfor, the best ones, with the better views are already taken :)2- Is nightlife in Havana in April ok? There are less people on the street on work days than on weekends? There is big difference beetwen Friday and Saturday night. If I will come in April can i go to disco and clubs on Tuesday and Wednesday too.The only big difference is in july and august because in cuba that are the months when everyone goes on vacation. Specially students and young people....

So close, but still far away from the USA

by melosh

The most important activity is walking around and exploring. If you only see resort Cuba, or world heritage preserved Cuba, or urban decaying Cuba, or countryside Cuba from a bus, then your view is not only limited but unbalanced. Security is both a blessing and a curse; you can go almost anywhere permitted by the government and feel safe, but you and the Cubans you come in contact with are being watched. As a visitor, you are expected to visit tourist sites so your getting off the beaten track is viewed with some suspicion. I know this is a bit egotistical, but one of my favorite memories may be of when I walked into a very little hole in the wall type shop with beer and sandwiches in Santiago de Cuba on the day of my arrival in Cuba and began talking with the attendents and they told me after a bit of conversation that they thought I was Cuban by the way I walked and talked.Another...

FAQ' s...

- Money: don't take USD, U'll be charged around -15% when exchanging on to CUC, the usual money U'll use in Cuba. Better take canadian dollars or euros or anything else. Can't tell U too much about travellers check or credit cards. Only I know that credit cards issued by USA banks don't work in Cuba. Try to change some CUC into cuban pesos, there are someplaces where paying in cuban pesos will be better. Rememeber always that 1 CUC = 25 cuban pesos. Many particular places accept payment on CUC and cuban pesos combined, just be carefull when paying not to get confused between the 2 different currencies - Where to stay?: I always recomend casas particulares. There a a lot of them. Avoid renting an ilegal one, the price will be the same as a legal one and U'll not get into any trouble. Renting a room in a casa particular is better because U'll be directly in touch with cubans way of life,...

Monuments

by RickL

To fill the void of not having endlessly repeating commercial billboards as we have in North America. Cuba has filled in the landscape with large political messages and monuments to national heroes. Not a bad practice except that there is such a shortage of building materials to provide people with decent housing and other infrastructure (roads, bridges, schools, etc.).

drink the bottled water!...

by RickL

drink the bottled water! However, most hotels and restaurants will try to sell you the little bottles. So I suggest you go to the grocery stores and buy the larger bottles because you will be using a lot of water while you are there. Have a smaller bottle to carry around with you but refill it from the larger bottle. Saves money! Also, be aware of the water you use to brush your teeth, wash your plates etc. Our baby became VERY ill from the bath we used to bathe her in when we were last in Cuba.

Holiday From Hell

by samandtom

Don't go, it's a rip-off island from start to finish. The food is terrible.... unless you can live on lobster or can handle rice with black beans everyday! The begging on the streets got so bad that we avoided getting off the bus on several occassions. Every one wants to make a buck out of you one way or another. Upon leaving, we were in the airport for 6 hours prior to departure, due to the queues upon check-in and immigration (plane being delayed for 3 hours), had to pay a departure fee of 25pesos (I would have paid 100) and then all the guys in the group had their cigars confiscated. Needless to say I will Never go back! Mojito's
