Change some local money

by Stroller

There're two types of currencies in Cuba, i.e. Peso Nacional and Peso Convertible. With one peso convertible, you get 26 peso nacional. Peso nacional can be used in the local free market (to buy some fruits, for example) and on the street (to buy ice cream and a sandwich, for example). I changed only 10 convertible peso and found I could use the peso nacional forever. With one peso nacional, you can get one ice cream or one bread on the street, which means with one USD you can get 26 ice creams.

About Peso Cubano (or Moneda Nacional)

by prepost

As of US dollars are out starting in Nov 2004, there are only two currencies in Cuba. (Yeah, you would think it is less confusing!)1. Peso Convitible (or "cuc"). 1 cuc = 1 US$ and this is what tourists use mostly, for transportation, restaurants, accomodation, etc.2. Peso Cubano (or Moneda Nacional, or MN). It is a much cheaper currency: 26 MN = 1 cuc = 1 US$. This is what the general Cubans use for their daily life, such as transportation, markets, grocery, etc. Tourists can get this by converting pesos convitibles in Cadecas. Towards the end of my trip, I didn't want to line up to just exchange for a dollar or two, so I just get some exchanged at street vendors or casa owners for 25 MNs for a peso convitible.Just to give you an idea, I spent about 20 cuc worth in 3 weeks because I bought a lot of street food, fresh vegetables and fruits. Spend pesos cubanos saved me loads of money and...

How to Meet Others for Solo Travellers

by prepost

When I was backpacking through Cuba, the following are some examples on how I met other travellers:- Viazul bus and bus station. Since Viazul is supposed to be for tourists only, this is one place you are guarenteed to meet others heading to the same destination.- Casa Particulars. Some casas have more than one room to rent. I was able to catch some quick chats with other fellow travellers who stayed at the same casa. With one British couple, we were able to plan a day excursion together.- Restuarants. I have either walked up to other solo travellers to ask them if I can join them for the meal, or just chat with them a bit afterwards. As a matter of fact, I had the pleasure of meeting Conner Gorry, the author of Lonely Planet Cuba in Holguín this way in one of the restaurants recommended in the book (1720).- Entertainment venues. As a young female solo traveller, I constantly feel...

The time vault

Classic cars are the most recognizable feature that one could expect to find while in Cuba, most notably on Havana streets. I personally find them one of the most photogenic characteristics of an already extremely photogenic country... All those saturated colors over the streaking sun of the tropic, the shapes and forms that could not be observed anywhere else in our world. They speak to us about a distant age that no longer exists... Please, check my Classic Cars travelogue for more pictures...

Don't be afraid to ask.

by TOFFY

When travelling in Cuba, solving problems might be difficult since there are not many signs - everyone knows where they are, and they know where everything is, so there is no need for signs.Whatever your problem is, however, - flat tire, ran out of gas, need s thermometer - JUST ASK anyone on the street. They will be pleased to help you out. We had just travelled the mountain road at Mayari, in a rented car, and it got covered to the roof in red mud. Feeling we ought to wash the car off before returning it, we took the next off road that led to the ocean. We landed in the little Village of Juan Vicente, where we stopped the car and started pouring salt water on the car. Well, it wasn't long before someone arrived, and when we asked for fresh water, it was only a matter of minutes before the bucket brigade arrived and proceeded to wash the car for us. Payment? Not necessary, but we left...

Taking photos

by TOFFY

It is always polite to ask if you can take a photo of someone before doing so - "Puedo tomar una photografia?" They will always say yes....but if you really want some fun, take a polaroid camera, as well as your regular camera. Most Cubans have never seen such a thing, and it is an instant ice breaker, especially if you don't speak the language. Plan to give them the photo, and while they crowd around the picture, you will get some lovely shots with your regular camera. They won't even notice you there! We once took a photo of a three year old child and gave it to her. Her mother, of course, was thrilled, but the child had no reaction, until she recognized her own hat in the picture. You could see on her face the light slowing coming on, as she figured out the little girl in the picture was her!Regarding school kids, the primary school uniform is red, while the high school uniform is...
