The dry season is from November to April, the rainy season is from May to October (often only a short shower in the afternoon, most days are sunny and without rain). Hurricanes may occur from June to November. A local told me that they are more frequent lately than 10 years ago.

Average temperature is 25 degrees C. Max. temperature in summer is between 30 and 40 degrees C with high humidity (80%). In the eastern part of the island (Santiago, Baracoa, Holguin) it is usually 3 to 5 degrees warmer. In the Havana area and western Cuba (Pinar del Rio) the temperature at night can sometimes drop to 14 degrees C (especially from Decembr to February) and it can be coolish-humid.

    Some guidelines for tipping:

Porter at the airport/hotel: 1 CUC
Waiter in a restaurant: 1 CUC or 5-10%
    Musicians in a restaurant/bar: 1 CUC
Music CD of bands in a restaurant/bar: 10 CUC
Room maid: 1 CUC (for 3 days)
The woman in front of the toilettes: coins (10-25 cents)
Cleaning the rental car: 0.5 - 1 CUC
Security at parking lot: 0.5 - 1 CUC

Many families and their relatives are living of the tips earned by family members in tourism and therefore tipping is recommended. On the other hand you don't have to tip if the service was not good.

Hemingway would have his usual MOJITO pronounced Moh-hee-toh at his favourite haunt, La Bodeguita Del Medio, located in old Havana. I did try one at our resort and I must admit that it's an acquired taste and I didn't much care for it. But there were many that did, so I thought it would be fun to post the original authentic recipe which I got from the website TASTEOF CUBA.com
    1 teaspoon powdered sugar
    Juice from 1 lime ( 2 ounces )
    4 mint leaves
Havana Club white rum ( 2 ounces )
    2 ounces club soda
1 sprig of mint for garnish

Place the mint leaves into a long mojito glass (often called a "collins" glass) and squeeze the juice from a cut lime over it. You'll want about two ounces of lime juice. Add the powdered sugar, then gently smash the mint into the lime juice and sugar. Add ice (preferably crushed) then add the rum and stir, and top off with the club soda (you can also stir the club soda in as per your taste). Garnish with a mint sprig.
You can also add a lime slice to the rim of the glass.

One of the customs in Cuba is drinking mojitos. I saw a recipe for mojitos in a book about Cuba before I went there. Had a few mojitos there last year, didn't like the drink that much, but it's such a big thing there, you should try it. I got the recipe in French so I'll post it in French, then translate it.

Note: mojito recipes usually call for fresh mint. In Havana, the Cubans told me a real mojito is made with 'hierba buona', a specific sort of mint. It's not easy to find the real thing, many peddlers sell ordinary mint and tell you it's hierba buona. I don't think it matters much, but purists might... you know... :-)

    La formule de la Bodeguita:
Un doigt de sirop de sucre,
    trois de rhum blanc,
    jus de citron vert,
    Perrier,
glaçons et menthe fraîche un peu froissée.

    The Bodeguita's recipe:
    One 'finger' of sugar syrup,
    three of white rum,
    lime juice,
    Perrier,
ice cubes and fresh mint slightly crumpled, rubbed together.

    Ganbei!

p.s. we prepared our own mojitos on the boat to Isla de la Juventud. I'm still standing after a few... they go down well. Pic to follow.

Visiting Cuba is for some of us visiting Spanish period builded churches and Cathedrals like the famous one in Santiago once visited by the Pope in the late nineteens - together with Fidel.
But we are wrong - there is still no official religion in Cuba.
But the believes of Cubans is dominated by Santeria - a religion of people of African descent. Although it incorporates a number of Christian themes and motifs - the heart and soul is African.

In Cuba you have several ways to get around !
By old russian planes - trains (please make a reservation) - busses or local official horse/bicyle taxi's and private taxi's.
Taxi's : first agree about the cost - never ask about the condition of the car - just experience this way of travelling around in a Cuban city !

More a latino caribbean instrument called G?irro : A percussion instrument consisting of a gourd with grooves cut around its circumference and large holes in the bottom. The performer holds the instrument with the holes in the bottom while scraping across the grooves with a stick in a rhythmic fashion.

    The "claves".
I had the occasion to meet Billiet Huib - a specialist and fan of Cuba and their musical instruments.
Claves - in Latin called "Clavis" are simply two wooden sticks used in the golden spanish exploration time at the Ship wharfs in Habana (16/17 century) - as tools and fasteners the wooden panels.
