Photo Ops

by snoopycat

You will want to photograph the beautiful people of Cuba.It is customary to compensate people for their kindness in allowing you to photograph them. You will find that one or two U.S. dollars will be much appreciated.ALWAYS ASK permission BEFORE taking photos.

La vida es un Carnaval

by Luchonda

Visit the "Casa de la Trova" or "Casa de la Musica" In every city you will find those temples of music - the entrance fee is only one dollar. A drink one dollar - so clearly a one dollar country !!!But talking about return on investment :a second at 100 %

Genteel poverty

by googoosh

Not sure that genteel poverty is a great way to live, but I still couldn't get over how beautiful these balconies managed to be, even though they look as if they'll crumble around you today orat the very latest tomorrow.

yellow stainy walls

by googoosh

The paint they use in Cuba is not particularly water-proof. Which isn't a real sensible decision for an island with a humid climate. Cosequently the walls shed their layers and give us this strangely moulten apperance.

Taxi please !!

by Luchonda

In Cuba you have several ways to get around !By old russian planes - trains (please make a reservation) - busses or local official horse/bicyle taxi's and private taxi's.Taxi's : first agree about the cost - never ask about the condition of the car - just experience this way of travelling around in a Cuban city !

New Year's Pigroasts

by RickL

New years is usually celebrated with the roasting of a pig (if you can afford one). Other Cuban families I know only have enough to buy a side or hind quarter. This year I was lucky enough to have been invited to three roast pig dinners. Two of the pigs had been filled with a mixture of rice, liver, onions, potato prior to roasting over the fire for seven hours. Que rico!

Shaking hands

by Luchonda

Cuba is a tolerant country but attitudes are still conservative.Nudism and topless sunbathing are not allowed on most of the beaches.Prostitution is all around in Havana - not allowed but condonedDespite the macho traditions the taboo concerning homosexuality has virtually dissapeared - provided that common sense is respected

Tip

by aramat

Almost anyone who provides some service expects a tip in USD. Of course it's understandable, given the economic situation, but after a while it might become quite annoying, like when the guy who carelessly carried our luggage about 20 metres actually demanded to be tipped.

SALSA

by swesn

Cuban son and other Latin rhythms soon evolved into a catchy style related to jazz called SALSA. This, in turn, evolved into the trashier American version. Cuban exile Celia Cruz was the Salsa Queen. The legendary and much beloved star recently passed away on 16 Jul 2003. Thousands mourn salsa legend Celia Cruz
