Cayo Largo Things to Do

  • Playa Sirena

Playa Sirena is 2.3 km long, the beach is sheltered & the sea was calm. As the afternoon temperature was in the 30's, I spent a lot of my time here in the shade under a palm tree. There is one main restaurant & bar here, although a couple of shacks on the beach sold drinks. There were a couple of stalls selling souvenirs & handicrafts. Apart from...

  • Natural swimming pool

Just off Cayo Largo the sea is so shallow due to the reefs & high sand dunes that a natural swimming pool has been formed.Standing in the clear warm sea with the blue sky above was a truly unforgettable experience. We were the the only boat there at the time & it felt just like paradise.

  • Marina Cayo Largo

There are boat trips available here to take you around the Island & to scuba diving & fishing sites. These can be booked at the marina & fishing equipment can be hired too. At the marina there is a small bar which sells snacks as well drinks, an ideal place to sit & relax prior to or after your boat trip.

  • Cayo Iguana

This was the first stop on a catamaran cruise from the marina. It is a tiny island inhabited by iguanas, you can walk around and take photos of them. Seeing traces of litter on the island combined with someone trying to feed one a sandwich made me think perhaps it may be better if tourists didn't visit the island.

  • Turtle Hatchery......

Take a look....different types of turtles...at least at the time that I was last there...They were in different sizes of concrete "ponds"....and graduated to larger ones as they matured...then released....or eaten.. : o [

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Besides walking on the beach or drinking cocktails at the resort bars, the only spot is the disco-club in the old airport building. Nothing special, but it's open every evening.
You can reach it by bus from your resort.

  • Airport

Flew by an internal flight from Havana to Cayo Largo, the flight took 35 mins. The airport is small but well laid out and easy to arrive & depart from. On arrival there is a small baggage claim area, we were greeted by a band & dancers. There is transport to take you to the marina or resorts. On departing there were about 6 check in desks, there...

  • Bicycle hire.

Bicycles were available for rent in Cayo Largo. They're an ideal way to get around, as nowhere on the island is far enough to justify a car.The weblink below shows an aerial view of the Island with some facts.

Cayo Largo Shopping

  • Cubita coffee

Cubita is the national brand of coffee. It is excellent if you drink it freshly made in Cuba, but forget the tourist boxes with instant soluble Cubita coffee that you find in the tourist shops. They are cheap and the box is a nice souvenir, but the coffee is nothing special.

  • Rum, of course

Rum is the national drink in Cuba. It is good, cheap and available everywhere.Between the aged rums, the one I liked the most is Relicario, a cuban brand that is very difficult to find outside Cuba.I paid 5 US$ for a bottle, but local people pay much less for it.

Cayo Largo Local Customs

  • Towel art!

Note the towel sculptures. This is a general thing in Cuba, not just at Villas Iguana, Cayo Largo. The radio picked up US stations from Florida Keys, including WPIK (country) and WWUS (US-1).The television got satellite channels like VH-1 and US evangelical channels. ...All seemingly surreal in Castro's Cuba.

  • Police car

The only reminder of "real Cuba" in Cayo Largo is the soviet-made old police car. There is just one in the whole island: more than enough, for sure.

  • Mosquitos.

Cayo Largo is plagued by aggressive mosquitos in the evenings: COVER UP!...The Cubans 'fumigated' the place daily around dusk with devices like chainsaws, or those things gardeners use to blow things away, emitting a kind of smoke, which I believe was DDT.Exposed skin will get the biggest insect bites you've ever had.

  • The turtle farm

When we went the guy running the place hadn't seen anyone all day. OK so keeping turtles in small swimming pools is not ideal .... but this guy genuinely loved his turtles and was putting them back in the ocean. It felt like a good place to be.
