Tropicana: Legendary Caberet

by TRimer

The legendary, Tropicana nightclub. Back in the 1940s, when Las Vegas was just a twinkle in Bugsy Segal's eye, the Tropicana was the showgirl extravaganza -- an evening of scantily clad Habaneras dancing almost acrobatically to the best Cuban big band around. It still is today. Only tourists can afford to go to the caberets. People dress up in jackets and ties. Evening wear is also seen.

El Floridita: Home of the Daiquiri

by TRimer

This is the place where the daiquiri (not the frozen slushy kind either) was invented.Another of Hemingway's hangouts, the walls are festooned with pictures of him, and his bar stool sits empty. In mid-1991, El Florita was fully restored in the style of the “Regency” décor that it had displayed back in the 1950´s. In 1943. the place was made famous when the magazine “Esquire” declared it to be among the best seven bars in the world. But let's admit it, this place is a bit of a tourist trap. More of a place to photograph then to hang out at. Daiquiris here go for $6 which is more than double what they are elsewhere.

Hotel Casa Grande: Santiago de Cuba

by YanetT

Another spot to hear great Cuban son, or jazz is the outdoor veranda at the Hotel Casa Grande that faces Parque Cespedes in Santiago de Cuba.It is a great place to hang out, people watch, eat and listen to live music. I was dressed casually, but usually wear a short skirt or dress in town, or capris (not shorts).

Hotel Inglaterra in Havana: outdoor patio

by YanetT

While waiting for a friend (long story eh amiga, haha), I was with two friends and got to people watch and listen to a wonderful Cuban group, Grupo Carisma play as I waited. I bought the CD, very good. The young girl playing the flute was amazing and gorgeous as most men watching her can attest to.It was fun just watching passers by, having a beer and listening to great music. It is not far from the promenade (Prado) and Capitolo. casual

Casa de la Musica - Havana: Cuban music

by YanetT

One special evening was spent with my friends at a club called Casa de La Musica. The group playing there that night was the famous Cuban band, Los Van Van.Everyone was up dancing and the 12 or 13 piece band was great. It was a great night for me and my friends (one of whom happens to be Anja) and this is her favourite band. So that made it even more special. not necessary to 'dress up', but looking sexy at any time, always helps.

En Casa (at home): Cuban Dancers

by RickL

Everyone who has been to Cuba has marvelled at how great they are at dancing. Is it because they have it in their genes? No, it is because they start at such an early age...je!je!je!These girls were practicing for a school presentation and they were gettng very good! Cubans are very good at entertaining themselves... out of necessity! pretty casual!

Casa de la musica: Cuban son (salsa)

by K1W1

In several of the main centres there are Casas de la musica. These are typically venues where young and old musicians will play in front of international audiences. The music and atmosphere is amazing and is a must for any visitor to Cuba. Dress is informal. Foreigners generally will not be turned away but it is respectful to be tidy. Cuba can be hot so dress accordingly. The locals will almost always be well dressed and presentable - follow their lead.

Discos can be found in many towns

by rachel_sun

The best place for live jazz and salsa is the Hotel Riviera(from midnight). It is closed on Wednesday though. Discos can be found in many towns in the main square. There will be good dancing, plenty of rum and a great atmosphere.Lots of locals will be there, but they welcome tourists. All the touristy hotel areas have great bars and restuarants. There are also plenty of festivals on throughout the year too. January=Carnival at Varadero, lasts the whole month with plenty of street parties. Febuary=International Jazz Festival,Havana.A week long coming together of top jazz artists. July=Carnival,Santiago De Cuba. There are street dancers .A week long event. December=New Latin American Film Festival. The most important film festival in the Spanish speaking world. And last but not least,my favourite pass time was drinking all the great rum.Do not miss the beautiful local rum..... Classification:...
