City Camagüey

by rsudic

3rd biggest city in Cuba and one of seven original settlements of D.Velazquez (1514). It was razed by pirats in 1668. and then rebulit with a street plan that seems designed to help ambush future invaders. Historic center is/has:- one of the largest in country (area of 330 ha), - house urban area- largest urban park in country (Casino Campestre park)- peculiar urban tract distinguished by its irregular designPeople here don't depend on tourism and that's visible around.I'll try to write more tips in Camagüey section.

Topes de Collantes

by Helga67

Topes de Collantes is a nature park in the Escambray Sierra, one of the four biggest mountain ridges in Cuba. This region is characterized by steep peaks and deep in-between valleys, lavish vegetation, endemic flora and wildlife, waterfalls, natural ponds, caves and natural trails. The Topes de Collantes information Center is located near the Kurhotel Escambray. Here you can inquire about the walking trails and areas that can be visited. Entrance to the park is 6 CUC.We did the 2.5 km-Caburni trail. It's a 1 to 1.5 hours walk down to a waterfall, passing a coffee plantation, pinewoods and an overhanging cliff. Good walking shoes are necessary as the path can be steep and rocky, especially the last half hour. At the waterfall you can have a swim in the natural pool at the lowest point of the waterfall or go up the ladder to enjoy the 65 m-high waterfall. Be aware though that the walk back...

Soroa

by Helga67

Soroa lies half way between Havana and Pinar del Rio in western Cuba. Here you can hike to a waterfall and a moutain top mirador (lookout) with a wide view over the Sierra de Rosario. The waterfall has a parking area (1 CUC) and restaurant. Entrance to the waterfall is 3 CUC, which includes a drink in the restaurant afterwards. The trail to the waterfall (salton) is only 250 m and very easy to walk. The path is concreted and winds up and down through the woods. The waterfall itself is not very spectacular, as there isn't much water during the dry season. The water falls down for about 10 meters into a small pool, which is used by the locals for swimming. The trail to the mirador is about 4km. It took us 3 hours to go to the top and back the same trail. There is also an orchid garden (orquideario) across the street of the parking area. It has the largest orchid collection in the world....

Cienaga de Zapata

by Helga67

Zapata peninsula is a large wetland in the south of the Matanzas province. There is a national park, crocodile farm, and boats that will take you along the lagoons and canals. At the park information center in Playa Larga you can ask for a guide (park rancher). Entrance to the park is 12 CUC per person and 5 CUC for the guide. The park rancher showed us the birds (mostly endemic and water birds) while we drove along one big road (21 km) to the swamps. We saw some lovely birds, but I'm sure that because of the noise of the car, there were many that we didn't see. Early in the morning you'll have the best chance of observing the birds.

Isla de Pinos...biggest island in Cuba archipelago

by russian_yaz

Yes, it's the Island of Youth or The Treasure Island, very well known because Robert Louis Stevenson took this small island as the place where his famous novel with Long John Silver and Cpt Flint treasure took place. The special municipality named Isle of Youth, the largest of the more than 600 isles forming the southern Archipelago of Los Canarreos, is called by many the "isle of the thousand names". Natives used to call it Camarco at the time it was discovered by the admiral Christopher Colombus, who named it La Evangelista. Isle of the Treasure and Isle of the Parrots were names also given to this place before Spain decided to colonize it and turning it into the colony of Queen Amalia, founding its capital, Nueva Gerona, on December 17 of 1830. Then it started to be called Isle of the Exiles, because it was precisely the place where those who opposed the metropolis used to be...

Pinar del Rio province- Las Terrazas

by russian_yaz

Only 68km from Havana, just some minutes after crossing the division between Pinar dle Rio and Habana province U'll find this beatiful place. There are 2 rivers nearby, San Juan and Bayate, with termal water fontains where to take a therapeutical bath or just enjoy the warmess of the waters. There is a small hotel "La Moka" where U can enjoy a beatiful view of the valley where this beatiful place is located. Also U can visit the Buenavista coffee farm and take long walks on La Serafina, Las Delicias, El Terracero and El Taburete trails. In addition, "Rancho Curujey", one of the most attractive and relaxing restaurants due to its location by a lake and near a mountain, stands out, serving exquisite dishes from Cuban cuisine. U can enjoy those gastronomic peculiarities in a cozy setting, surrounded by the natural beauty of nearly 800 plant species and more than 70 species of birds, many of...

Matanzas province- Visit Cienaga de Zapata

by russian_yaz

Cienaga de Zapata is located to the south of Matanzas province. Opposite to Varadero this is a huge swamp full with typical and endemic flora and fauna. If U're really an nature lover, like to spend hours seeing many different types of birds this is your place. Here also U'll find a small recreation of a typical aborigen settlement fill with real size statues of aborigens in their daily jobs or just smoking or playing "batos", an ancient game cubans aborigens use to play. Here U'll find a good typical restorant where U can eat crocodile meat. The place is full with crocodiles but don't worry, it is safe off course :)This place is also known by it's beach "Playa Giron" and "Playa Larga". For sure U've heard about the invasion of Bay of Pigs in 1961 by the north americans. This is the place. U can swim there, the beach could not be as beatiful as Varadero and others but it has it's own...

Santa Maria del Mar

by JeSuisJill

You have to hire a cab to drive about 30 minutes to the beach. Most driveres witll take you round trip for about $20-40. I think a LEGAL taxi will do it for $40. If you can hire a "friend with a car" he's likely to do it for $20 round trip. What I prefer about this beach as opposed to Veradero is that CUBANS can actually go there visit THEIR friends and family. Veradero is exclusively for foreigners. Why would you want to go on holiday in another country and spend your time away from the natives of the place?Anyway, it is a beautiful beach where you can buy fresh fish cooked right before your eyes, roasted peanuts and watch the gorgeous bodies of the Cubans saunter by.
