Holiest Christian Shrine

by RickL

These are the very long and impressive stairs lead from the village of El Cobre to the actual basilica containing the Cuban shrine outside of Santiago de Cuba. It's free to enter but most Cubans make offerings of flowers to El Cobre while some of the foreigners have left more substantial offerings that are on display. Hemmingway left his Nobel prize but thatis no longer on display.Taxifare to El Cobre and El Moro is about $20 to $25 roundtrip.

Get away from the resort

by bkathryn

One afternoon, I headed off for a walk with a guide and a bunch of other people. We walked for about an hour and saw a small local farm. It had exotic birds (peacock, guinea fowl, parrot) and animals (small crocodile and tree rat). It also had lots of tropical fruit "on the hoof" so to speak and a splendid view.

Step back in time in Trindad, Cuba

by coollikethat

Many people never venture to this poor town. The resort offered a tour to Trindad, Cuba on the west coast. When you visit this town, it's like stepping back into time to visit the Spanish Colonialism era. Old cars, antiques, and Spanish architecture give charm and history to this village.

Fidel Speech(they didn't let...

by yubali

Fidel SpeechThe speech held in plaza de la republica in habana.it was a hilerious situation to see all the people that where obligated to be there.. or the BIG brother will know...All the shops that day where closed due to the speech, and the people there shouted "Patria o Muerte..." - homeland or death.. a scary little sentence. But well.. its a communist country, so it should be expected to be like that.(they didn't let us take a pic of fidel himself)

Cayo Levisa

by luiggi

Cayo Levisa, part of the Archipiélago de los Colorados, with a long, sandy beach and reef running parallel to the shore, with good snorkelling and scuba diving (lots of fish). Cayo Levisa is 15 minutes by boat from Palma Rubia.

María La Gorda

by luiggi

María La Gorda, in the middle of nowhere, reputedly the best diving centre in Cuba and an idyllic spot for relaxing or doing nothing but diving. The sea is very clear, very warm and calm, even when it is too rough to dive anywhere else in Cuba. There is good snorkelling with small coral heads close to the white sand beach, or you can go out on the dive boat.

Coconut beach is fabulous

by rachel_sun

Do go to Playa Santa Lucia,1 and a half hour drive from Camaguey. There are hotels along a wonderful beach and a superb coral reef is here. Diving here is great and it is peaceful .Coconut Beach is 3 miles from here and it is one of Cuba's best beaches. There are small resraurant shacks on the beach selling fish.I loved it here,it is not to be missed.Beautiful Coconut beach.

Go to Trinidad which is 45 miles

by rachel_sun

Go to Trinidad which is 45 miles east from Cienfuegos and the road skirts the foothills of the Sierra del Escambray.Forested mountains provide a fitting backdrop to this quiet bewitching town.Restored mansions have been made into museums, while art galleries, craft shops and resrayrants are in the lovely old buildings. There are coloured bulidings and cobbled streets and banana groves.Best of all ,there is no traffic because of the streets surface. The 20th c entury has not touched this place at all,it is so peaceful.

Yumuri River

by Pixiego

The Yumuri River is near Baracoa which is in Guantanamo Province. The river lets out to the ocean so there is a little break there for surfing. They see surfers every once in awhile and my husband enjoyed his day of surf there. The people do have tourists there every once in awhile but not that often. We asked a guy we picked up about the surf and he told us of the area, we would never have been able to find it with out him.The locals there are terrific. If going there take along some old clothes like shirts or sandals for them and you will be much appreciated!

My Moped Story

by RickL

An all-inclusive resort was added to my plane ticket to Santiago de Cuba for $50 more. I was taken to the isolated resort west of Santiago. You could pay the driver of the bus that transports the workers to and from Santiago for $5. I immediately left the resort and toured Santiago and Guantanamo for ten days and it was awesome. I then decided to go back to the resort and get my money's worth of food and beer. Well, the free food and beers were very good but I was getting bored very quickly! So with one whole day left I rented a moped! Some of the other younger tourists had rented them and showed me their scars from accidents with the many potholes on the road. I was not deterred! With a one minute orientation, I was off and determined not to flip over like the others. I went further west on a road that goes nowhere and therefore very little traffic other than some delivery trucks and...
