Most people miss the little towns when visiting Cuba, and trust me when I say, these towns and homes have character and are a treat to see. You must get out of the resort and visit little towns and Havana, you will not regret it.

Cayo Levisa Island, just 1 kms off the coast, 100 kms west of Havana with local ferry. Calleta Buena, sort of natural pool in the south coast near to Playa Larga. Cayo Sta Maria, north of Sta Clara - must pay a $10 toll - the same to Cayo Sabinal, north of Ciego de Ávila, but with beautiful deserted beaches.

Definitely visit Havana, the capital. Most people that go to Cuba simply stay at the resorts, and although they are fun and relaxing, don't reflect the lifestyle of the Cuban people. Head to the capital and see the great Spanish architecture, and learn about the history of Cuba.

When you went to the Plaza de la Revolution you will have seen the Che mural on the ministry of the Interior building, or even been up the Jose Marti Memorial and seen the museum. But how many go off to the side and find the Jose Marti National Library?? They have an area for non members, but if you ask nicely and show your passport, pay a few $s to join, then you can take a look at the collection of posters from the start of the Revolution to the present.

Try to become friends with the locals, they will lead you to markets meant only for them(for a small fee). There you can use Cuban pesos which cost virtually nothing and experience the cultural aspect of Cuba.

Right near our resort, there was a little place with a driving range. We went there one morning to hit some golf balls, and ended up having a few drinks at the bar, which was only a 'hut'. There we met some very interesting people, Omar and Emilio. There we had the best Mojito and had a great time talking to them.

We walked everywhere in Havana. We would start out from our dwelling in Vedado, and walk taking a different route each day. We walked through all the neighborhoods that everyone told us not to go into and never had a glimmer of a problem. We would go right through the back streets wind our way through the Alleys. Havana is very very safe even at night. We hooked up with some Cuban friends from a person we knew from back home and found our way to their house at night time deep in heart of Havana. Also, we went to the house of our Bus Driver from Trinidad to Havana at and drank some rum with his family. Again finding his house was another adventure and took in through streets where you don't normally see tourists. My suggestion is to try to meet some one from your country that has family in Cuba and set out to find them. This will undoubtedly take you off the beaten path. Or get to know a...
