Playa Pilar, Cayo Guillermo.
Personally out of the 6 beaches we visited and stayed at for a day in the whole of Cuba, except the beaches in the east, I found Playa Pilar the best and by far. Admittedly it's a 100 kms drive to get here from Morón but it is well worth it. Nice stretch of white sand, lovely warm turquoise water and not too many people. There is a restaurant set back a little from the beach and a drinks stand on the beach itself, 2 CUC 50 a Mojito or Piña Colada which I didn't find excessive seeing where you are. Beach chairs are there for hire including the sunshade, 2 CUC per day and it costs 1 CUC for parking your car!!!! There was the visit of a couple of boats from the all-inclusive places on Cayo Coco, but they didn't even get off the boat except for a swim around it.
See the birds.......
Just after crossing the bridge onto Cayo Guillermo, after about a km there are lagoons either side of the road and it is here that you have a great chance of catching some pelicans, heron and above all pink flamingos. Superb sight to see these birds in the wild and pretty close at that.
for 5 cuc each, u can take a small tour of the island (about 1 hour) on the back of this horse..... i recommend doing it early morning or late afternoon. you will find the gentleman at the melia cg hotel by the pond where you change your towels. at the sol, they offer horse back riding for 10 cuc.
you can visit this amazing beach from melia CG with either a daily 'train' or simply with a taxi. Either way, the cost is 5 cuc per person. If you are not a guest at the melia, there is a bus or train that goes around each resort for 5cuc and you can get off at the melia and then get a taxi. The taxi driver will ask what time you'd like to get picked up. We heard great reviews so we decided to stay for almost the whole day. Many people only stayed for a couple hours but they regretted it....there is a small snack bar where you can get some drinks and beer for 1 cuc. If you get hungry, they also serve some food such as fillet of fish (6.50 cuc), shrimps (9 cuc) and lobster (15 cuc). There's lot of huts for shade, but you still might want to go early (around 9-10am) to guarantee shade. the lounge chairs are 1 cuc. Also, they offfer you a boat or catamaran ride across to the small island, media luna or half moon island, where you get to snorkel in the 2nd largest barrier reef. The cost is 11 cuc....you spend about an hour there. make sure to bring some bananas or bread to feed the fish. Do not miss playa pillar
there is a 100m pier at the melia resort where you can fish off of....bring a fishing rod that u wouldn't mind giving away....there are many locals that only have the wire and hook....some will ask u for it....we made a good friend while fishing. he did not ask for anything, instead he actually came and offered us a stronger wire used for cathcing bigger fish. he kept it in his pocket until he saw us which was a couple days. we decided to give our rod to him.

Lots of choice
For additional cost, you can choose a variety of different one day and two day trips the tour operators offer.
As we only went to Cayo Guillermo for a week (and went to just chill out) we only went on one trip - day trip to Habana. this cost £250 for two with Thomas Cook and included coach transfer to Cayo coco airport, flights to Habana, tour guide, lunch, walking tour of Habana, part coach/driving tour of Habana, return flight and transfer to hotel.
One day perhaps was not enough to appreciate Habana, and I am sure there are many better virtual tourist sites on this city so I have just included some photos of our day.
Or don't do anything
The Cayos have all inclusive hotels, and not a lot else, but then again, with this sort of scenery do you have to do anything? Just relax on the beach or by the pool.
The entertainment team do provide activities during the day. There are shows every night. And kayaking and pedeloes on the beach (one hour per day) are included in the all inclusive holiday.
There are two bars (pool bar and lobby bar) and a nightclub in the complex.
Tour operators offer excursions such as two day excursion to swim with dolphins, fly to Havana for the day, etc.
But why not just relax!
there is room for one plus the operator...cost 30 cuc...you will get a great birds eye view of the small island. about 10-15 minutes. you will find the operator at the sol cayo guillermo beach.
