About 85 kms west of Cienfuegos is the town of Australia on the main highway. Turning south at that point takes you into the ZAPATA PENNISULA, three quarters of which is a swamp with lagoons and canals.
Home of all kinds of wildlife, the government opened up a national park here, and have endevoured to create access points. One of these is known as the Tesoro Lagoon. Group boats, and private motor boats are available at the Crocodile farm. They will take you through a maze of lagoons to Guama, which is a complex of islands joined by wooden suspension bridges, where you can rent a Taino Indian style hut on stilts (very comfortable), relax in the bar and restaurant, walk the nature trails, visit the museum of Taino history, and even shop for souvenirs.
Keep the camera handy. You will be in bird paradise, including osprey, the local rail and the famous bee hummingbird.

This area of Cienfuegos is located south of the city's centre, towards Punta Gorda. There aren't many tourists there and that's where I stayed in a casa particular, few minutes away from a small beach Laguna del Cura. This beach is clearly not meant for dollar tourists !!!!
