  • Paladar Dona Carmela: a hidden gem

by cowgirljunkie Written Mar 29, 2012

A hidden gem in a private back garden, a cooling rest stop from a warm, sunny Havana day trip. The lush green vegetation was cool and refreshing.
The lunch was a delightful surprise. Starting with a fresh salad served family style, we (a party of 6) could make our own combination. The aubergine was fabulous. Rice and black beans, also family style, was more than enough for all of us. We had a small but varied selection of seasonal entrees to choose from.

Favorite Dish: The seafood soup was delicious. The Red snapper was perfect! Moist and flavorful. The fried plantain was an added treat.

Dona Carmela: Nice paladar near El Morro

    Doa Carmela's garden

We had our lunch here, in a nice garden, after visiting San Carlos de la Cabaña, which is very close to the paladar. It was relaxing to be having lunch at a garden, after the humid heat during sightseeing.
We found it a little expensive, but we were "guided" by a spontaneuos "cicerone", who was probably earning a percentage...
Nevertheless, we had a nice time at Doña Carmela.

Favorite Dish: We had "pargo" (fish) and pork, all served with salad, frijoles, aubergines, rice and steamed potatoes. All the sidelines were absolutely delicious except for the salad, which I didn't like very much. I preferred the pork, but my companions were more fond of fish, so it's a matter of personal taste.
As regards to drinks, I would always choose Bucanero beer better than Cristal
