Feria de los Artesanos in La Habana Vieja: The best place to get a souvenir

No matter what kind of souvenir you're looking for, from original paintings to hand-made cigar cases and Che Guevara t-shirts, chances are you'll find it at this huge outdoor arts & crafts display located just a few steps away from the Plaza de la Catedral. I was pleasantly surprised to see that they were far from trying to rip off tourists - everything sells at a pretty good price and there's no need to bargain, a simple hesitation is usually sufficient to make the original price drop down to a couple CUC. And even if you're not planning on buying anything, it's still fun to walk around the crowded stands!

I got a lovely hand-painted sketch of La Bodeguita del Medio for only 1 CUC

Not too much, less than in any other souvenir shop

ROMEO Y JULIETA: PREMIUM BRAND CIGARS
  • Tip Rating:
  • One of the stops on our tour was to a cigar store ROMEO Y JULIETA. After most of us piled into the small store it got pretty crowded. They did quite a nice business from our group as some bought boxes of cigars and some bought many bottles of Havana Rum. Romeo Y Julieta is a premium brand of cigar and is produced on the island of Cuba for Habanos SA, the Cuban state-owned tobacco company. The brand is exceptionally popular around the world. Sir Winston Churchill was perhaps its most famous devotee. Open 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday - Friday

Premium brand cigars and Havana rum

    Feria Artesanos Old Havana: Souvenirs
  • Tip Rating:
  • Here U can find cuban souvenirs for all tastes. Pictures, sculptures, clothes, anything U would like to give as a gift to someone.

It depends on how much are U willing to spend. Some things costs only 1 usd but there are some that can be up to 500 usd like some sculptures I've seen

Various: A bit of a moral dilemma....
  • Tip Rating:
  • Buying cigars in Havana is very easy to do, but it does throw up a number of moral dilemmas : 1) You are officially allowed to take out 50 Cigars without any documentaion and $200 dollars worth more if they come form an official shop and you have the paperwork to show it. Do you risk taking out a few more ? 2) In the Tobacco factories (see other tip) and indeed just about anywhere you are offered cigars. Theses have probably been pilfered from factories. Do you feel comfortable buying stolen goods ? 3) A Doctor in Cuba still only earns about 15 dollars a month, if you buy from non-official sources then you are distorting the economy and encouraging people to sell to tourists rather than train for more worthwhile professions. 4) Should you be further helping the regime, if buying from official shops ?, or depriving the goverment of dollars (if buying illegally) ? - depends on you politics I suppose.

FERIA DE LOS ARTESANOS: ARTS & CRAFTS MARKET
  • Tip Rating:
  • An outdoor arts and crafts market FERIA DE LOS ARTESANOS is located close to the Plaza de la Catedral. After we had lunch, our tour guide gave us about an hour of free time, so many of us snooped at the market. Some beautiful original paintings depicting Havana images and old American cars, were on display here, for a very reasonable price - from small paintings which is easy to bring home to some very large ones. Also some beautifully made cigar boxes could be bought here as well as the popular Che Guevara t-shirts.

Don't always pay what they first ask for. Haggle for a better price

Cuban rum, cigars and coffee probably are some of the most attractive items for visitors and you can get them all in one place, at la Casa del ron y del tabaco cubano. Just to give you an idea, a bottle of 7-year-old Havana Club sells for about 11 CUC (you'd have to pay about $30 in Canada). Cigars are pretty expensive but apparently that's the price to pay to get the real deal. And if, like me, you can't get enough of the strong, sugary taste of Cuban coffee, you won't want to leave the country without a couple pounds of the good stuff!

Rum and coffee for sure, and cigars make nice gifts for folks back home

Cigars: quite expensive Coffee: about average Rum: very cheap

    Bargain hard for an artwork
  • Tip Rating:
  • Another product of allowing limited private appearance is the appearance of 'Artists markets' which you will find in the main tourist area of havana near the cathedral. (Plaza de Artisans is an open-air street market on Calle Tacón) My resident expert informed me that although mush of it was complete tosh aimed at the touurists there were some works which showed the artist had been classically trained to a high level. I purchased a Cuban street scene that now proudly hangs in my dining room. This shows my wifes good taste - I had wanted to go for a "Cuban woman with big knockers scatching arse" picture.

It is important to bargain hard, as remember thata doctir is still only paid fifteen dollars a month here. They do have to pay for their pitch however, so this needs to be taken into account.

    Official marketplaces: Local Markets
  • Tip Rating:
  • Those markets we visited during our cycling trip in Habana and Camague - estonished about the way Cuban people has to survive. There is a so called "Bodega" - where the locals can buy the basics with the gouvernment tickets.Mainly rice and milk for the children. Than the gouvernment market - empty racks and than the US dollar market - a lot of choice - but payable in US dollars - so a lot of Cubans can not afford the basics like we know it

Fruit - vegtables and meat !!

Us dollars - above average for the Cubans - so every dollar from the tourist is welcome !!

    Havana Club Rum
  • Tip Rating:
  • If you have a chance be sure to purchase your Havana Club rum. Buy the silver(clear) kind if you plan on making your own mojitos when you get home. If you are buying the dark rum splurge and buy the 7 year one.

Cheap, cheap, cheap! Anywhere from 3 U.S. dollars for a small bottle to 15.00 U.S. for the 7 year rum.
