Port Hemingway lies only a few Kilometers outside of Havana and is home to a couple of hotels that are aimed quite squarely at the 'boatie' crowd. The smart surroundings could easily be in the Costa Del Sol or the Algarve. The impression a visiting sailor would get who didn't venture beyond this area would be very misleading. The complex does however house a well-priced and well-run Scuba diving school where we learnt to Scuba-dive for the first time. I was impressed with the good quality instruction, the friendliness of the crew, the facilities, equipment and the wrecks and Coral you could explore after only a couple of hours tuition. The only downside may be is that you can be put with other divers who are completeing more dives than you, and thus you are waiting around with little to do out on the boat.

    Bicycles and Cuba
  • Tip Rating:
  • Cuba is almost flat so U can take a bike with you and go round and round in Cuba with no problem. Our worst problem: The SUN and the Heat! You'll sweat a lot so take enough water eith you to drink. In some places you'll not find good water to drink and rivers aren't so close one to another. Be sure to take a good lock with you because here a good bikes can be stolen anywhere. There're many places with parking places for bikes but not everywhere. If U plan to fly to Cuba without bike it can be tricky to get one... U could go to Cuatro Caminos, everybody knows where it is. There there's a huge underground market of all kind of bikes, road, MTB, city and others. Some are used some are new and some are even stealed. My advice is to go there with some cuban friend that can help U. Also U could go to the shops, but the bikes U'll find are usually not too cheap and the quality is far from good. Forget about brands in the shops, maybe on the street U could get something decent. Trails in cuba are not so well signalized and in general is not common to see tourists in bikes. There is a small group that organize tours in Havana, cannot rememeber names or how to contact them. I only remember that the tours where usually heavily politically oriented so it depends on U what to look for.

If your bike is somehow modern and new, take with you some spare parts because here they aren't easy to find and are expensive. Maybe you'll want to take more than one spare tire in case you have a flat tire. Always remember if U plan to do a long ride inside Cuba that there's a big economical problem so spare parts are hard to find. Take with U not only the usual stuff U'll carry to do a bike trip but take the double of stuff.

    Baseball
Baseball is the national sport in Cuba and cubans are very proud of their national team, winner of gold and silver several times on olimpic and world games. The season begins in november until mid april, 90 games on the regular season, then a playoffs with 8 teams and then the finals. The best teams ever are Industriales, Villa Clara and Santiago. Industriales representing Havana and with a long tradition and rivalry with the Santiago representant team. If U wish to see a game while in Havana go to Latinoamericano stadium, the best baseball stadium in Cuba, home of Industriales team. The spectacle is huge, people shouting, helping their teams, it is worthy getting into a baseball game anywhere on the island but in havana is even better.

No equipment needed if U're just an spectator. If U plan to play then U will need a baseball globe that fits on your hand and nothing more. If there is too much sun then a baseball cap will be good.

    Playing Domino's
Not technically sport but still a great game. You'll find many locals playing domino's in the street. Join in for a game or stand and watch the locals in action.

    Beisbol
Cubans are passionate about their baseball (in which, players cannot strike and all make the same salary). Ask around about a baseball-discussion park, where Cubans go to argue (very emotinally) about the players and teams. A Spanish-speaking friend of mine went to the park to drunkenly proclaim the greatness of Camaguey, a team he knew nothing about- but had bought the team's jersey earlier in the night. When it nearly came to fists, we realized these guys are far more serious than the average American baseball fan.

Team Jerseys. Pick a random team and become a fanatic. Camaguey should be everyone's first choice. 'Ca-ma-whhay Ca-ma-whhay, Mata Los Industriales!'
