La Bodeguita del Medio is another bar where Hemingway hung out. He drank Mojitos here. It was so crowded I couldn’t even get in the door, and so smoky and grim that I wasn't sure I really wanted to go in anyway. Nothing upscale about this place!

I had to see it because of the Hemingway connection, but it isn't the place I'd choose to spend the evening. Maybe I'm the wrong generation...

    Hours are noon to midnight

    Hemingway's Bodeguita, Calle Empedrado

My main reason for wanting to go to Havana in the first place was to visit all the sites that American writer Ernest Hemingway (1899-1961) had once visited and made popular. Hemingway spent quite a few years in Cuba and his love for this island gave birth to such amazing novels as "The Old Man and the Sea" and "Islands in the Stream". So of course, La Bodeguita del Medio was at the very top of my to-do list! This charming little joint is located just a few steps away from the Plaza de la Catedral. When we got there, the place was crowded with people from all over the world and musicians were playing traditional Cuban music. We had to pay 8 CUC for two mojitos but they were hands down the best mojitos we drank during our entire trip (and we drank several!) and the atmosphere was unbeatable. A truly great experience!

    Hemmingway Haunt

The Bodeguita Del Medio, Empedrado 207, Habana Vieja, was a favourite watering hole of Ernest Hemmingway. Comida Criolla y Mojitos (Native food and Mojitos), what a great place to eat and drink. Just around the corner from Cathedral Square. The walls are covered with signatures of its patrons from the day it opened. Famous signatures such as Hemmingway's and Salvadore Allende's are protected under glass. No visit to Havana is complete without a Mojito at the Bodeguita and a Daquiri at the Floridita. The bottom photo shows the signature of Ernest Hemmingway from December 1954 at La Bodeguita Del Medio in Habana Vieja.

Papa Hemingway had his mojito here. At first I thought it might be a tourist trap - but it's not!!!! It is really a god place to have a mojito and for me, it is still the best mojito in town. Ok it is more expensiv than other places, but that's ok, as the people are honest, service is perfect and drinks fantastic.
