Classic Cuban Art on Display
After five years of renovation, the Museum of Bellas Artes has been open for a while now. The entire building has been renovated and an incredibly beautiful annexe added, with a large collection of antiquities housed there.
The best part is the cuban art collection, mainly from 19th and 20th centuries. It is exhibited in such a way that an evolution from spanish colonial to cuban creole realism can be traced. I suggest you engage a guide, so that the nuisances can be understood and personal histories about the painters learned.
please allott one morning to the museum and visit the annexe at the end and marvel at the reconstructed asturiana hall, it is actually something to behold.

    Flea Markets
  • Tip Rating:
  • There's a huge flea market in Old Havana several days a week. It's open all day, unlike many markets that are morning only. It's a colourful and bustling busy market where the people are always friendly and smiling.

It's a great place to go for souvenirs and I would advise you to bargain, even though things are already at knock down rock bottom prices here. Bargaining adds to the fun.

Watch your handbags though as you could lose anything in that crush.

Buy handmade wooden items and colourful figurines. I got two fabulous hand carved wooden pipes - one even has an ebony mouthpiece. Fabulous.

    Plaza de Armas
A short stroll heading south east of Plaza de la Catedral brings you to the picturesque Plaza de Armas. Here under the shade of lush tropical trees you can browse the stalls of the second hand book market for Revolutionary literature and books on Che or Fidel. Alternately you can just sit out of the sun for a few moments, relaxing and taking in the atmosphere.

    HAVANA HISTORY DAY TOUR
  • Tip Rating:
  • Wednesday, November 14, 2007
One of the must things to do in my opinion, is to make a day trip to Havana which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We booked our HAVANA HISTORY DAY TOUR through our Nolitours representative at the cost of 67 CUC (Cuban Convertible Pesos) - about $70.00 CDN.
The bus picked us up at 8:00 a.m. and after picking up some more people at other resorts, we were on our way to Havana. We drove through the town of Varadero and then on to Matanzas and finally - Havana, arriving around 11:00 a.m. We did a walking tour to Cathedral Square, to see the wonderful Cathedral and to look inside. We then went down a side street to Hemingway's favourite bar - Bodeguita Del Medio" where he had his usual Mojito. Then it was time for lunch at a typical Cuban restaurant which was called "El Patio". There we had a lunch with a choice of chicken, pork or fish. I had the chicken which came with a cole slaw and rice. You also could have a drink and coffee with dessert.
After lunch we had free time until 2:00 p.m.
After getting back on to the bus, we headed for "Revolution Square" and then to the Christopher Columbus necropolis (cemetery). We were then taken to a cigar store "Romeo Y Julieta" where some people bought cigars and bottles of rum. A cigar factory tour was not part of the tour.
The last stop was near Central Park where some very beautiful Havana buildings were located such as the Capitolio which very much resembled the Washington DC Capital building.
About 4:00 p.m. we all boarded the bus for the trip back to Varadero. Overall a very nice tour and very well worth going.

    Old cars
If you like old american cars from the 1950´s Cuba is the place to go. They are everywhere and most of them are in good condition.

    Plaza de la San Francisco

    Plaza de la Revolución
It’s one of the most important monuments in the whole island. It has a huge statue of José Martí… it’s where Fidel gives his famous speeches every May 1st… the building across the street with Che Guevara’s silhouette.

I mean… it’s just a square, but it’s very interesting to go and see it.

    Tribuna Anti-Imperialista
With its 138 black flags, it represents the 138 years of fight Cuba has been going through... and the flags are black to honor their martyrs. (That's what an officer guarding the area told me).

If you get lucky, you may have the chance to see some international show there... (eg. Air Supply, La Oreja de Van Gogh, etc.).

The funny thing is that it's located right in front of where the US embassy is (or used to be) {although I'm not that sure about this}... and all the political propaganda around is pretty cool!

    Malecón ...
I’m sure everybody goes at least once to the Malecón while staying in Havana… it’s the street that goes along the shore, there might be cool things to see or not… but just walking along its sidewalk is worth everything… the breeze you get from the sea, the birds, the waves smashing the walls… everything, it’s a very relaxing area.

If you are in Old Havana, get to the canal … see the Castillo del Morro, the Crsito de Casablanca… there are plenty of things to see while you walk around.

    Capitolio National
In the middle of Centro Habana is the National Capital. I'm not sure if there are tours but there certainly where plenty of tourists mingling around.
