Piglets are expensive commodities in Cuban villages; this one here was spending its short life under a watchful eye of the owner. No doubt it will end up in a sanwich stand few months from now and will bring some much sought pesos to its owner.

About half way from Santiago to Guantanamo I was beginning to whine about pain and suffering from coffee deprivation so we stopped at the local fruit stop and entered the village and inquired about home made coffee - it is not possible to get it otherwise as coffee shops are exclusively in bigger cities only. We were invited into the backyard of the nearest hut.

I would love to have a backyard like that - wouldn't you?
The village was lovely, well cared for, clean and friendly despite overwhelming poverty, lack of basic necessities.

We were encouraged to do some fruit picking to take with us; I wouldn't dare climb up but some of us were more adventurous.

Our coffee hostess was the most welcoming and friendly and pured us numerous cups of the delicious, dark, rich, sweet coffee....
Note her kitchen in open air in the back.
