Pre-Columbian Golden Idol
by TOFFY On the main street of Banes is an archeological museum which proudly displays artifacts from 7000 years ago, of the Siboney Indians, and 1000 years ago, of the Taino Indians. Its collection is supplied from over 100 archeological sites in the immediate area. This is a tiny museum, however, it is world famous for its pre-columbian pure gold idol found in 1946.
In the year 2004, the town received some money from a Spanish town with which it has twinned. These funds are being used to give the museum a facelift, along with the street that it is on. The street has been closed to traffic, and a park dedicated to the museum is being opened there.
