On the main street of Banes is an archeological museum which proudly displays artifacts from 7000 years ago, of the Siboney Indians, and 1000 years ago, of the Taino Indians. Its collection is supplied from over 100 archeological sites in the immediate area. This is a tiny museum, however, it is world famous for its pre-columbian pure gold idol found in 1946.
In the year 2004, the town received some money from a Spanish town with which it has twinned. These funds are being used to give the museum a facelift, along with the street that it is on. The street has been closed to traffic, and a park dedicated to the museum is being opened there.
Be sure to ask for Luis, the main guide, who will be honoured to give you the tour, in Spanish or English.

How would you like to live on a 5th floor in this building, with no running water, no air conditioning in 30+ temperatures, with no money to afford anything else but rice and beens, on $7 per month income for the whole family of four ? Free education in Cuba does not open doors to better jobs: the couple who lives here holds university degree.

There is nothing touristy about this grey, hot town in the middle of nowhere. People are wonderful as everywhere in Cuba but the town is nowhere near touristy destination.
