The Taste of Cuba tour, offered during our stay at the Hotel Playa Pesquero, was a delightful day spent touring the fishing village Gibera, the city of Holguin, and made stops at a cigar factory, museum, and had free time as well as lunch in a small restaurant. We greatly appreciated the opportunity to learn a bit more about Cuban life & culture,...

    3 out of 5 stars

This place has not been in the guidebooks I have seen as it is relatively new. It has a covered area for dollar paying guests and another patio style area for people wanting to pay in pesos. I thought it was going to be much more expensive than it was but most entrees were about $3-6. Not sure about the peso menu. Service was polite but the food...

  • Beach Restaurants

My favorite was the meal at the Pesquero Beach. It was a nice meal from chicken with oil and garlic...hmmmm when i think about it i can still taste it...yammie. The chickens we grilled on a wooden stick for 4 or more hours. The sea was clear blue, the sky was clear blue, we had a great singer with us and it was heaven.

Holguín Transportation

  • Local Transportation

Bici Taxis are to Holguin what tuk-tuks are to Bangkok. You will see hundreds of these bicycle powered people carriers zipping around the streets of Holguin. Each bici taxi differs slightly in design; some have a central front wheel and two back wheels, while others are more lopsided like a bicycle with a side cart. Some have a canopy roof, while...

Holguín Shopping

  • Not much shopping

Cuba does not offer the tourist shopping that you might see in other areas. Outside the grounds of Club Amigo is a tourist market and the resort offers a couple of gift shops. Generally you will find the usual items, although tshirt and other clothing sizes are often limited.Prices are set and very little bargaining is done. Generally speaking...

  • Guardalavaca Market

Its worth taking a trip to the local market for your holiday souvenirs. The market is not a particularly big one, approx 20 stalls. You can find some nice handmade jewellery, wooden crafts, lace, acrylic/oil paintings.Whilst some bartering can be done please remember that the Cubans are on very low incomes and the stalls are their livelihood.

Holguín Local Customs

  • Give Aways

Get to know the locals. They are the best people but remember they are poor. Bring lots of clothes and toys for the children. One little girl her toy was an empty toothpaste box. We litterally gave away all my clothes and shoes except what we were wearing home. Be generous and accept and invitation for lunch or dinner. Nice place.

  • Holguin City

There is a lot spainish in Cuba, also the buildings. If you like the spainish buildings there are alot of pictures you can make just of the buildings. So bring enough. This building has a balcony and from this balcony Fidel spook his first speech over the people in Holguin.

Holguín Warnings and Dangers

  • Mopeds

MOPEDS!!! Please be careful when renting a moped... I've been to Cuba many times and have sort of gotten acustomed to this kind of transportation. Anyhow, I try to be extra careful regarless. I have seen many people get badly hurt, I would say on all of my trips... brokes arms, jaws, and many stories about flying off the road. This IS the best...

  • General Safety

We found Cuba to be very safe. The people were extremely friendly, always saying hello as we passed and always eager to help. We felt comfortable walking around in remote areas alone and visibly displaying our camera in public. This was a welcome change from our earlier trip to Central America, where crime is a problem. Unfortunately, we found it...

Holguín Tourist Traps

  • Cigar & Alcohol Purchases

On many tours, you have the opportunity to stop at a cigar factory. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn about the skill and craftmanship in Cuba's wonderful cigars! The store at the cigar factory, although not outrightly a "tourist trap" can be rather enticing...We found that the prices at the cigar shop at the factory were actually a little...

I really did not find one. Maybe it is the sailing when there is to much wind, maybe it is the catamarantour when there is to much wind...but i realy did not find any trap. And we went to do a lot overthere but most on our own. There are (not yet) people trying to let you buy stuff you do not need and no is no in Cuba.

Holguín Off The Beaten Path

  • Moped Rental

We rented mopeds and drove to many villages nearby and met the local cubans. Had a tour of their homes and learned a bit about their culture and everyday life. With us we brought many gifts for young and old. Knowing a little spanish really helps. Visited a Cuban School and handed out about 200 lollipops to all the local children!!

  • Nature

Many Cuban houses and farms off the road resemble this one. Some of them do not have doors or windows as it is too hot. Around the house you will most likely see chicken, cats and dogs... feel free to chat with the locals if you see them outside.

Stay on the beach, and visit the city! The beaches are breath taking in Holguin and the temperature tends to be the best in this part of Cuba year round.
