Matanzas Things to Do

  • Rio Canimar - a beautiful place to visit

Most resorts have a Jeep Safari that includes a visit to Rio Canimar. A "native" show, a boat ride down the beautiful briny river (really nice to swim in), a traditional BBQ lunch at the Arboleda (park) - makes for a great outing. Horseback riding. Of course, you can go on your own as well. Check out the crocodile and the jutia (he's so cute). Meet...

  • Bellamar Caves / Cuevas de Bellamar

Took a taxi arranged by concierge at Memories Varadero, cost 60$ for ride in 1955 red and white Chevy. Left around 8am got there around 9am. Unfortunately didn't open in theory till 930am which ended up being closer to 1030 as they say Cuban time. There was 3 locals who were there before me at 9 and by time first group of around 50 went through...

The folks that run the souvenir shop are wonderful. Raquel and Angelito. Very sweet and helpful. Rum and cigars are inexpensive. Nice little trinkets to buy.

  • Parque René Fraga

This park is a few blocks up the hill from Parque Libertad. There’s nothing very special up there… just a beautiful view of the Matanzas bay!

  • Cueva Bellamar

Bellamar is one of the main tourist attractions. It’s a cave 40 meters deep, and 750 meters long. It’s quite humid and hot… but it’s great! There are tons of light, so you can actually see around… it’s beautiful. The bad thing is that they charge you 5 CUC to get in… and another 5 CUC to take your camera with you. If you have a small camera, just...

Matanzas Restaurants

  • New (Spring 2013) Fabulous Restaurant

Newly constructed and overlooking the beautiful Matanzas Bay, this second floor restaurant is the best discovered to date. Professionally finished, including the wood-burning pizza oven, this stunning venue offers a variety of deliciously prepared, wonderfully presented selections.Newly opened just prior to our visit, and at that time only a few...

  • Great place to eat

I always like to eat in a place that you find the locals eating. There are a couple of good places to get a good meal at the Caves. There is an old man that has worked at the Caves for decades - His nickname is "Negro Oro". He makes the very best Mojito (not the drink, but the sauce that is added to pork). Lots of garlic and cumin. Unbelievable....

  • There is a lot of places to...

There is a lot of places to expend some hours in the night... here, near Varadero beach, the 'Pirates' night club. It as nothing to do with Cuba. But is a nice entertainment... here about Columbus and the 'discovery' of Cuba.

  • Car Rental

Have never found it a problem renting a car in Varadero - at the airport, in town, or through the hotel. It is expensive, gas is not cheap, but the luxury of having a comfortable mode of travel, a place to carry our stuff, and a ride at our fingertips is worth it.Most destinations have a person who watches over your vehicle (for a small fee).We...

  • Scooter

While it may seem like fun, would not recommend travelling very far in Cuba on a scooter. The roads are pretty pot-holed, the smell of diesel is enough to gag you, and the weather can change throughout the day. Did it a couple of times, but switched to car rental. Way more comfortable, and met a lot of great Cuban people who were hitching rides.

Matanzas What to Pack

by PeterPanandWendy Updated May 1, 2013

Camping/Beach/Outdoor Gear: While it is impossible to take electric toasters to Cuba, we found the camping toaster we picked up for less that $5 from Canadian Tire to be greatly useful. And the Cubans were delighted - makes a great gift to leave behind! UPDATE 2013 - I see that toasters are now available for purchase in Cuba at a significantly higher price than we could find in Canada, but now at least we can buy it there for our casa.

Matanzas Off The Beaten Path

  • Row A Boat in salty Laguna de Maya

While this little local spot was introduced to us by our Cuban friends, I believe that the providers of the Jeep Safari Tours out of Varadero resorts may also be able to make the arrangements to go here (or at least to nearby Coral Beach for snorkeling).Off the highway onto the old coastal road, not too far from the Varadero airport, Laguna de Maya...

Varadero beach. Nice... not very different from the others. The water is colder than in the south (but not too much...).
