Tours and Day Trips: Varasub
  • Tip Rating:
  • If you aren't that kind of person who gets sea sick really easily, take this tour. The bottom of this boat is made out of glass and it takes you to the most amazing coral reefs where you can see beautiful fish without having do get your snorkeling outfit. I think it was about 25$US, which is not that expensive for what you get to experience.

Diving and Snorkle trips: Cueva de los Peces
  • Tip Rating:
  • Cueva de los Peces is a cenote, a naturally occurring hole in the ground, half salt, half fresh water - 70 meters deep. There are hammocks, palm trees, lush vegetation, lizards, birds, crabs, and best of all the water itself - all the fish in the sea in a smaller area.
There's a restaurant where they serve excellent crocodile and lobster dishes..

Catamaran: Catamaran Trip to Cayo Blanco
  • Tip Rating:
  • Cost 75 Pesos ( £1 = 1.7 Pesos ).
Collect you from hotel and transport you to Chapellin marina , about 5 minutes walk from Beaches Hotel, where you board the Catamaran.
The bar is open as soon as you board and the price includes unlimited drinks, beer, rum and soft drinks.
We sailed for about 1 hour, stopping twice to uplift live lobsters from small fishing boats, and then anchored in about 10 feet of water where we could snorkel, all gear provided, and the fish life was abundant.
The crew prepared the lobsters in the galley and the price was 10 Pesos each.
Then we set sail to Cayo Blanco for lunch, again included in the tour price.
The Island was beautiful, a real Robinson Crusoe job, white sands, beautiful warm water, you get the picture!
Lunch was very good, Lobster pieces, prawns, chicken, rice, vegetables and fresh fruit and again, the bar was free.
Lots of time for swimming, sunbathing and even a small hut selling t shirts.
Fantastic trip and great value for money as you also get entrance to the Dolphin show and a sunset cruise on either the Monday or Friday night as well for your money.

Diving and Snorkle trips: Swimming with Dolphins
  • Tip Rating:
  • Who can resist that cute face? ( and I don't mean the one in the West Ham shirt ).
Just a couple of hundred metres from Beaches Hotel was the Dolphinarium. To swim costs 65 Pesos ( £1 = 1.7 Pesos) and you get about 30 minutes in the lagoon and it's worth every penny.
They photograph ( 8 Pesos ) and video ( 35 Pesos ) you and they are very professional, you can view before you buy.
Awesome experience that everyone should try.

    Tours and Day Trips: Havana
  • Tip Rating:
  • How could you go all the way to Cuba and not spend at least a day to check out Havana? Havana is fantastic! I put it at the top of my "must-sees" while in Varadero.
Havana is the capital of Cuba, a UNESCO World Heritage Site for all of its glorious old Spanish Colonial Architecture. There are so many historical and cultural sights to see in Havana, including the Malecon (sea wall), the Artisans Market, all the old haunts of Ernest Hemingway, Old Havana and the San Cristobal Cathedral, the Plaza de la Revolucion, the old cemetery, the Capitol building, all the 50s cars, the Havana Carnival, and some of the greatest musicians I've ever heard! Sit on a patio, have a local mojito or daiquiri with a local cigar, a toasted "Cubano" sandwich, watch the people pass by, and know you're getting the real deal. It is the most beautiful city I have ever seen.
Arrange through your hotel to take a tour or a taxi from Varadero. Most of the reasonably priced tours include a stop at a cigar factory and a stop at Copacabana (for music, food, and dancing). We did an alternative where for $200 we had a taxi for the entire day. He drove us from Varadero to Havana, he showed us the sights, and drove us wherever we wanted to go. A very polite and friendly driver. It was, I repeat, fantastic!

Diving and Snorkle trips: Diving - Neptuno
  • Tip Rating:
  • This was our second dive excursion with the Barracuda Dive Club from Varadero beach - 2 tank Wreck Dive (Caribe and Neptuno).
Both were shallow dives at 10 and 11 meters respectively, kind of good introduction dives for newly wannabes certified divers.

Diving and Snorkle trips: Marina Gaviota Varadero
  • Tip Rating:
  • There are around 32 diving sites-including one at the Piedras del Norte Cay Underwater Park-between the Bay of Matanzas and the western tip of the Jardines del Rey (Gardens of the King) Archipelago. Three marinas-the Chapelín, Puertosol Dársena de Varadero and Gaviota-offer you the means for scuba diving: appropriate vessels, trained personnel, courses in scuba diving, a hyperbaric chamber and the transportation required for handling emergencies. The water at Varadero is so clear that you can see for 100 feet (30-40 m) under water. The temperature almost never falls below 75.2º F. (24° C.), even in the winter.

    Tours and Day Trips: JETSKI
  • Tip Rating:
  • We went on a jungle tour which involved getting there on jetski's. I'd never being on one before and I must admit I was a bit wary of them. It took about 10 minutes to get to grips with the speed and with the small swell on the open sea. After this I could start enjoying it and for a finish I didn't want it to end. You get to stop off at this type of island and see things such as snakes, crocodiles which you could hold(baby one about 3ft in lenght), giant rats, iguana's and tortoises. You also can a much needed cold drink. It's back on the jetski's and hack to base. All in all it was a couple of hours long and wasn't over priced. Two people can sit on each one. Anyway worth a visit.
We also did a tour of Matanzas city of which Varadero is a part of the province. Included in this was a trip to the Matanzas caves. It was an interesting tour with loads of facts on the history of the city and the dicovery of the cave. The caves weren't anything special as such as once you've seen a couple of caves you've seen them all. The city was interesting to the degree that you got to see poverty and the local markets. We got a guided tour on a coach and weren't allowed off, I suppose for time reasons but it was disappointing not to be able to stroll about the streets.
