Varadero: Be careful when booking a tours!!! Catamoran, Hava
  • Tip Rating:
  • Do not be fooled by all those tours, Catamoran , snorkling, Havanna, Caves etc...
I find them very expensive for what it was worth, for example Havanna trip with tropicana show was $129us per person, was not worth the money highly overrated.
Trip into Havanna I felt like sheep being moved here and there 10mins here 15 mins there hardly saw nothing, everything was on a shedule and we were rushed everywhere.
We heard from people in the hotel that the Catamoran was not good had to share snorkle gear with other people food sucked very cowrded with people all swimming in the same place as you $75us, MAKE SURE YOU ASK A LOT OF QUESTIONS BEFORE BOOKING.

Most of the tours you can do them by yourself, like Havanna you can take a bus from downtown Varadero cost about $15 each way bus leaves at 8:00 a.m. and comes back at 4:00p.m. you will have more fun and at your own pace. Most stuff in varadero is in or around there so you can go with a group of people together grab a cab and see caves underground that cost $5us instead of $55us per person. you can snorkle for free in different places in varadero remember the ocean is free, you do not need to spend ridiculas amount of money. MOST THE THE TOURS THERE ARE ALL MARKETING TRICKS, KEEP THAT IN MIND , SAVE YOUR MONEY AND GO VENTURING YOU WILL HAVE MORE FUN FOR THE BUCK!!! I PROMISE YOU THAT.

You are better off doing things with a group of people from the hotel all together than taking all these tours that all they are going to do for you is put a dent in your pocket, Rent a scooter , bike, walk or cab it where ever you want. Keep in mind that most of these tours are expensive and that you are on a time frame, HOW MUCH CAN YOU ENJOY WHEN YOU ARE RUNNING AROUND HERE AND THERE???
BEST ADVICE I CAN GIVE YOU GUYS, ASK PEOPLE WHO DID THE TOUR , BEFORE YOU DECIDE TO DO IT AT YOU'RE OWN EXPENCE!!! THESE ARE MY TIPS OF WISEDOM TO YOU, SO USE THEM.

"In all the beaches of Cuba the sand was made of grated silver, though in Varadero it was also mixed with diamond dust" -Character in 'Raining Backwards'.

Beware! You may want to spend your entire trip on the beach! The main beach is 11.5 km long and unbroken. Towards the eastern end of the peninsula, it is divided by rocks into private beaches where the more upscale resorts are, this picture is on one of the private beaches, they can't stop me!

    Money Exchange, credit cards
  • Tip Rating:
  • The official money of Cuba is now the Cuban Convertible Peso, or CUC. The US dollar is no longer in use. They're also called "chavitos." You'll need to change your money at the airport, a bank or at your hotel from your national currency. Anyone bringing US dollars is going to take an extra 8-10% hit in addition to the fees for converting the foreign currency at the bank or cadeca. It's best to use the official money exchange venues as counterfeiting and theft is not unknown.
They're another type of money in circulation called "moneda nacional." If you do not have Cuban friends it's unlikely a tourist would have occasion to use the non-convertible peso, which is valued at about 20-1 to the CUC. A common scam is paying in chavitos and getting nacional in return.

Another common scam is to take a one CUC bank note and add a zero behind the one to make it look like a 10 CUC bank note. The scammer then looks for a tourist to help him (or her) to make change and the tourist gets stuck with the doctored note. ALWAYS make sure that any 10 CUC notes also say Diez on them and not UNO!!!

    Crime: Watch your stuff
  • Tip Rating:
  • Cuban people are known to be friendly and you will probably never meet anybody that's been ripped off by a Cuban.

However, we were this time at the Bacelo Solymar. It was raining outside, we put our things under the umbrella to go for a swim ....and found some of our things missing (watch, cigarettes....) when we came back.

Could be other tourists, I can't say....but , just in case - hide your things or even better, leave them in the room.....

I was given seriously misleading money advice before I travelled.

First of all, I was told that there are two currencies - pesos and dollars.

Then I read in a guide book that American dollars are craved and that many items can only be purchased with American dollars.

Both these pieces of advice caused me to rush out and purchase lots and lots of dollars.

The reality is that Cuba does indeed have two currencies - pesos (for the locals) and convertible pesos (for the travellers/tourists). You can purchase whatever you like at hotel shops, tourist shops, bars, restaurants and roadside kiosks with convertible pesos.

Dollars are not in demand at all. Taxi drivers and waiters told us that they prefer to get tips in convertible pesos or in Euros, as the exchange rate is better.

Do NOT change money in the streets - you may well be passed counterfeit notes.

Also, the exchange rate in the hotels is excellent and better than at the airport.

Hustlers and Jineteros: Beware of peddlars on the beach
  • Tip Rating:
  • As you're enjoying the sun on the beach you might be approached by men who want to sell you cigars. They'll usually try to get your attention and then say that they have Cohibas for cheap. Do NOT buy from these people as you could be duped and end up going home with cigars that are not even made up of real tobacco.
Note that there are authorized beach vendors on the beach who operate rolling their carts up and down the beach. They will sell trinkets and banana leaf hats.

Just say "No!" Also most resorts will have security guards around the perimeter of the strip of beach that the hotel runs. If you continue to be harrassed, just report the individual(s) to them or to the hotel.

Buy from the beach vendors if you must but I would save my money to spend in the resort gift shop or in Havana. Believe it or not the prices for most items in Cuba are pretty standard. I found that the t-shirts in the resort were exactly the same price one would pay at the market in Havana and at the Hotel Nacional in Havana.
Only buy cigars from government shops or the shop in the hotel. Never buy cigars from someone off the street. Even cigars at the market stalls could be suspect.

    Hustlers and Jineteros: cheap cigars?
  • Tip Rating:
  • only buy cigars from government stores! no matter what your new best friend says, REMEMBER THIS even though you probably heard it about 100 times. Even though I read this advise 100 times, I was tempted to buy from 'my new best friend' but I eventually came to my senses and bought at the government store. 99.9% of the time it's fake!

    Local Market
  • Tip Rating:
  • The local craft market was very expensive ( £15 for a vest top ), which was a shame as there weren't any other options to buy souvenirs until you get to the airport to fly home.
However, the wood carvings were very colourful.

Varadero: The whole town - in a way
  • Tip Rating:
  • This town was created (in the 60s/70s) for tourists and today is really the only Cuban town with a resort. The tourist sees nothing of real life in Cuba here.

Enjoy the gorgeous beaches and take advantage of the salsa lessons in your hotel.

Try travelling to somewhere like Trinidad instead.

If you go on the northern...
  • Tip Rating:
  • If you go on the northern coast of Cuba in January or February you can find 'el fronte del frio'. This cold front can go on for four or five days. In these days is often cloudy and there is an annoying wind. Unfortunately I've found it.
