If you'd rather not walk, there are many options available for touring around Varadero, including taxis, coco taxis and horse-drawn carriages. These are all easy to find downtown and there usually are a few of them waiting near resorts as well. You should always agree on a price beforehand, and keep in mind that the first rate they offer usually is a tad too high so don't be afraid to negociate. Most resorts also offer the possibility of renting scooters and bicycles, but perhaps one of the best options in Varadero is to ride the double-decker bus that loops around the peninsula. Tickets only cost 5 CUC for the day and it operates as a hop-on/hop-off system.
Perhaps the best part of this trip to Varadero Cuba, was being able to fly with SUNWINGS AIRLINES out of Windsor Airport. We were supposed to depart at 4:20 but because of delays, we did not depart until 8:00 p.m. We were given a $20.00 voucher for something to eat at the airport cafeteria. Because there were so many of us, airport management brought in a bunch of pizzas. Our flight was only three hours to Cuba, and yet we still got beverages and a hot meal - amazing.
Quite satisfied with this company and wouldn't hesitate to fly with them again.
Just in front of the RIU Resort entrance, you can catch the HOP-ON-HOP-OFF BUS. For 5 CUC pesos per person - buy tickets on the bus - all-day ticket - the open top double - decker tourist bus slowly drives along the length of the Peninsula from one hotel to another and brings you to the shopping center Plaza Americas.
The Viazul.cu bus service has a direct service from the airport to havana, one leaves at 4 pm which you might make or the other one at 6 30 which you will make it. the fare one way is 11 cuc. ( about 8 euroes). it is 3 hours and 134 km and a nice ride indeed. one stop at matanzas for five minutes.
you can book and pay on line: the fare would be shown in usd on your credit card billing plus 11 per cent charges.
please make sure you have a good place to stay since january is a busy month in havana, usually with film festival and jazz festival and perhaps even book fair.. all on different dates but in january..
Check the Viazul schedule, for times and fares from the airport in Varedaro to Havana, it takes about 3 hours. You can link it from Cuba-Junky/ transportation. Watch out for the occasional person at the airport you will tell you that you have to take a $10cuc cab ride into Varedaro to catch the bus. Tell the bus driver where you are going and they will often drop you off there if it is near their route.
There is a bus service to Varadero from Havana. it is the cheapest and convenient way of getting there. it is only 10 cuc one way. and the trip is three hours long. there are two departures one at 8 am and the other at 12 noon. comfortable buses and nice staff. www.viazul.cu you can even book on line.Viazul is mainly for the tourists to the island.
If you stay in a resort or a hotel in a resort area, it is easy to get a taxi, horse drawn buggy or a little motorcycle/golfcart type of vehicle to take you where you want to go. Make sure you confirm a price before accepting the ride. We found it quite easy to walk up to the main road and wait for a bus going in our direction. The driver has a partner who decides if they are going where you want to go and then decides on a reasonable fare.
It's like time stood still in '59. The blockade has forced many Cubans to keep their old cars running, no matter what the cost. You'd be surprised what is actually under the hood of many of these old rides.
There are busses going from one end of Varadero to the other and back again. It cost 5 pesos (5 EURO) and then you can drive around in Varadero all day and hop on and off as you like.
I just find these coco taki's adorable. But apparently they are not the safest mode of trasportation
