The beach is white and sandy, some meters from the seashore there is a 'line' with coral stones and shells along the beach. The molluscs shells are heavy, big and with hard and thick shell.
(NB: This is a protected nature area and you must act accordingly. The corals in the sea are very fragile and are not to be 'picked'!)

At María la Gorda there are two boats that goes out with tourists for diving.
You can hire equipment and you can go a diving course. The boats go for different places.
A cheaper alternativ is that you bring your snorkel and cyclope and just swim out near the beach. Whatch your back for the strong sun!

To come to María la Gorda you have to drive for a rather long time on a way that is sometimes with damages. But if you drive carefully it is no problem, the trafic is sparse and almost no cars.

Favorite thing: The coast is exposed for the winds and waves, see how the cliff has erodated.
This part is called 'Las tetas de la Maria la Gorda' (The breast of Maria la Gorda) in honour of - as the legends tell - her swelling bosom.
María was a beautiful girl from Venezuela that got hijacked by buckaneers. She followed them here and settled down. She waited while they went on 'sea hunting'. She supplied the marineers with water and food and did also give them amorous moments if they so wanted. The buckaneers were very fond of her, and she seems to have acklimatized here. She was by the years growing thick, which gave her name.
Famous and popular was her ritual bathings from the cliffs.
(I have to disappoint you, this happened many many years ago!)
