    Basilica del Cobra

This village (about 12 miles from Santiago) was once famous for its Copper (Cobra)
The statue of the Black Virgin in the Cathedral is famous and a tourist attraction.
John Paul II visited this place during his Cuba visit in 1998

This is us driving towards Basilica de Nuestra Senora Del Cobre: home of the holiest shrine in Cuba and the bascilica is most impressive. Cubans and tourists flock there for different reasons. My Cubans friends go there because they are part of the resurgence of the Catholic church in Cuba. It costs nothing to enter and view the shrine and there are many interesting 'ex-votos' (gifts) which have been left to give thanks since the 1920s. Most Cubans leave gifts of fresh flowers which the nuns accept a room on the side near a small guest book which you can sign. The only downside is all the pushing and shoving inside the bascilica which I feel is most 'un-Christian'.

    Holliest place in Cuba

When you approach to this site from Palma Soriano, you'll be amazed of its beauty in middle of rich landscape. Pope was there, you should too if you're around Santiago. Popular Cuban sport stars left their medals there as a sign of gratitude. Indoor is beautiful too. Patron saint of Cuba and only basilica in Cuba.

    The Cathedral

The Cathedral itself - one of the most popular places in Santiago.
On this spot - many local people will try to sell
something - like flowers and religious
    souvenirs.

The sanctuary of Cobre, Santiago de Cuba

You can't miss a visit to the sanctuary of the Virgin of Cobre, the patron of Cuba. Cubans come here from every part of the island to ask for miracles and pray.
